Since I am a first year hear at UNC, I have not been greatly involved with the organizations at UNC. However, I have been working as a campus fellow from the North Carolina Democratic Party. This matters to me because it helped me get involved on campus early. I plan on attaining a degree in law after my time as a undergraduate, then pursuing a political career. Working for the state party allows me to work with campaigns an gaining beneficial knowledge that could help me in the future.

While in high school I was an National Officer with the Beta club. I will traveled to other states representing the National Beta Club speaking to tens of thousands and inspiring the future leaders of our country. I worked at a community pool and the job allowed me to connect with the children who came to the pools multiple times a week throughout the summer. Many of those kids come from backgrounds that the statistics are against them to succeed. The pool was their place to have an enjoyable time without doing things that could lead to consequences. Being a part of so many great organizations, for example SMAC (Stillwater Makes a Change) and Youth Leadership Oklahoma, has not compared to being a part of Pink Out week at Stillwater High School. So far, I believe that my greatest accomplishment has been being a Co-head of Pink Out week. Pink Out has helped me grow so much as a leader and has taught me how to execute large scale events. I am currently a senior Political Science major, History minor, with a concentration in International Relations. I am also the chairman of the Howard University NAACP Political Action Committee. I am an academic, I am a student leader, but more importantly, I am a servant. It is my firm belief that the reason I was blessed to be given the opportunity to get a college education is so that I can use this privilege and knowledge to help others. Just recently in December I was fortunate enough to go on a service trip to South Africa with the YAALI program. There we did community service and connected with our brothers and sisters on the continent. This was a very impressionable experience for me, especially because it was my first time leaving…

It was an amazing feeling to give to the community in that way. I was selected as the master of ceremony for our yearly Veterans Day Assembly this year also. It was an honor to be able to lead the assembly and make sure that the veterans were honored for their true acts of bravery. Also through National Honor Society, I planned a Red Out at a basketball game, a Cardiac Ball, and a 3-on-3 tournament in order to spread awareness and collect donations for the American Heart Association. We ended up raising 2,000 dollars for such a great cause!…

Upon entering my freshman year of college I recognized I was not fully prepared for the rigorous academic scheme provided at my school, Howard University. One of the main observations was my peers received educational training in Advanced Placement General Chemistry, Advanced Placement Organic Chemistry and even had the opportunity to attend actual college courses during his/her high school careers. Those classes were not an option for me through my high school. Soon I found myself falling into a pit of failure. Long hours of studying and tutoring only produced D’s, F’s and an occasional C on my Chemistry reports. I was thoroughly ready to quit. I still remember sitting in my professor’s office in tears when he informed me that my academic…

Since middle school, I have been involved in numerous local beach and river cleanup events. In Nature Academy I was able to design my own community service project. During 7th grade, I banded together with a few fellow classmates and we decided to clean up the streets of Felton one staple at a time. The state of the poles there were horrible; covered in the metal pieces from prior flyers posted there. After several weeks and hours, we had defeated the evil staples. In 8th grade, I had done some more community service on a smaller scale. By helping out in the community garden at school, I had helped the crops grow, that were then disbursed to families in need of fresh…

I have been raised by parents that believe in my potential to create positive change in the world, and that cultivate my desire to help people on a global level. My upbringing was the genesis of my ambition, but the growth of my specific interest in political science stems from my experience as a translator in Honduras. Until then, I was I didn’t realize how much power one’s voice carries. Without the power to speak out, people are defenseless, and as Euripides described, “It is slavery, not to speak one’s thoughts”. The people of rural Honduras are ruthlessly exploited by the few sources employment. These employers, cognizant of their leverage, set their wages so low that their workers cannot afford to leave the countryside or get a higher education. With no aid from their government, the rural Hondurans fall into a virtually inescapable and corporately-systemized poverty…

The reason I decided to choose Regis University is because I wanted a school that was close to home, and I also read wonderful things about there computer science program and how they are one of the top schools for active duty military online. I began to research for colleges about a couple months ago but recently decided to go ahead and apply. My needs for a bachelor and being able to stay focused on work are one of the reason I decided to pursue my education online, along with being married and wanting to have a successful life and career in the military. Being the first generation to join the military and go to college has taught me a lot of things that I never thought I would have experienced growing up. I am really excited to begin my…

Today I received a message in my student email about my academic progress. I was denied Financial Aid due to my poor academic performance my 2015-2016 semester at Mesa Community College. The reason for not meeting academic requirements the previous semester was because of my lack of organization with working, sports, and studying. I take full responsibility in not putting my academics before sports and work leading me to write this letter. I truly believed I could juggle working 20 hours a week as a swim instructor and also be a student-athlete for Mesa Community College while maintaining strong grades. I soon found myself struggling in classes and doing poorly on exams because I was not using my time correctly and pushing my school work to the side. In high school I worked as a swim instructor and ran cross country as I am now, I put little effort into studying and did what I had to do to get by. Those poor habits followed me into college and are now backfiring with proof through my GPA.…

This past summer I was part of the leadership staff at Camp Howard. I was a unit director for the 1st and 2nd graders who came to camp for the day. This unit consisted of 30 campers and 4 counselors whom I was in charge of. I am also the treasurer of the College of Democrats and I volunteer with multiple organizations. For example, I help students and community members register to vote and I work closely with the office of Lane County of Democrats. I volunteer with the National Society of Collegiate Scholars by holding toy drives for homeless shelters. Another service experience I've had is volunteering with the Sparrow Club in my hometown. Abilene Christian University exceeds my expectations of a Christian University. I would like to go to a school that not only calls themselves "Christian" but actually acknowledges Jesus Christ as the rock of their school and education. Personally, God comes first in my life, a university that feels the same is absolutely magnificent! My beliefs are such that it is not about a religion but rather a relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ. I do not belong to a denomination, I belong to God only because the relationship that we have is much greater than any religious personnel could give me.…

Since the beginnings of my educational career I have been interested in giving back to the communities from which I came from. At the start this was difficult as I had to work with my parents hectic work schedule. Once I became older and more independent I found more opportunities to get involved. However, it was not until I got my license that I was truly able to give back. Joining as many clubs as my homework schedule would allow, I went through numerous meaningful experiences that helped me understand my inner self.…

My participation in Student Government has taught me important leadership skills I will be able to carry with me throughout, not only my college career, but my nursing career. Sports has taught me that hard work, discipline, and teamwork will not only defeat any obstacle that comes my way, but with the help and encouragement of others, we can come together as one and get the job done. My extracurricular activities have taught me that with the aid of others anything is possible. Through my community service volunteering at a local housing company for the mentally disabled, I have seen first-hand what the impact one person can make on another’s life. Helping and mentoring the mentally disabled who can’t do some tasks on their own has touched my heart and changed the way I appreciate life in many different aspects. It just reminds me of how fortunate I am to be able to help other, despite the time it takes to do so. The overall time I have sacrificed to do these extracurricular activities inside and outside of school has all been well worth it. Overall, the life lessons I have learned and the change in character I have gained from these activities are gifts I will be able to carry with me in able to achieve my goal.…
