The subject of my essay is Tyler Perry. Perry is an American actor, director, screenwriter, playwright, producer, author, and song writer. He was born Emmitt Perry Jr, on the 14th of September 1969 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He began his career as a dramatist in 1992. He was inspired by Oprah Winfrey in his early 20’s to start writing. His first movie was “Diary of a Mad Black Woman.” This movie got a 16 percent rating in the movie review website “Rotten Tomatoes.” He was named the highest paid man in entertainment earning $130 million between May 2010 and 2011. As of June 2011, Tyler Perry’s films had grossed over $500 million worldwide. He produces a TV show known as “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne”. His frist novel was “Don’t Make a Black Woman Take off Her Earrings: Madea’s Uninhibited Commentaries on Love and Life.” He uses possessory credit in his work titles. In most of his movies he takes up the role of an old-fashioned black woman, who is the craziest person in the family, but seems to solve all the problems. He portrays the disciplinary aspect of the Black American culture through the role as Mabel “Madea” Simmons. Tyler Perry talks about his childhood: being beaten by his father all the time. He even attempted suicide in order to distance himself from his father. At age 16, he legally changed his name from Emmitt to Tyler. He was molested by his friend’s mother at age 10; and three other men before this, and he discovered his father had molested his friend.
