Tribalism In Lord Of The Flies
In many recent studies it has been proven that humans are predisposed to kill each other. William Golding the writer of “Lord of the Flies” writes about survival and our savage society in his book deliberately questioning humanities “norm” and social rights and wrongs way more than most writers would like to acknowledge. In order to depict his theme of civilized society versus tribalism William Golding uses symbolism to illustrate his concepts of money, power, and human nature. The narrative opens with Ralph, Jack, Simon, Piggy and other boys stranded on a remote island. There are no adults on this island and they are in the middle of nowhere after being shot down while in a transport plane in World War II.

The only survivors of the crash were children and they had to survive on the island alone (Knowledge n. pag). They elected the character Ralph as the leader of the group and the character Jack Merridew as the leader of the hunting party, which was made up of his choir group (Knowledge n. pag).     When the boys end up on a deserted island they initially act civilized. In the beginning of the novel their plane crashed and was dragged out to sea, leaving the boys stranded on an unfamiliar island. Because of the atom bomb's devastation, it's likely that no one knows where the boys are at. Piggy and Ralph were the first ones to meet up and they figure out a way out of the jungle and find a beach. Ralph finds a conch shell which he uses to bring the entire survivor on the island together. Between the boys they discuss a leader and choose Ralph over Jack. But Ralph makes him the leader of his choirboys and calls them “Hunters". Ralph and Jack decide to search the jungle with a couple of guys and exclude Piggy from the search party.
