“Trashed” Essay
From the perspective of space you can barely tell the effect humans have made on the earth. As you get closer, however, you can see the trash and impact we have truly caused. “Trashed” was influential to me because it opened my eyes to a different perspective. It showed me real world people in real world situations. I’ve ignored the facts and was ignorant to not think of the fact the world is deteriorating around me. I never really thought of where all our trash goes not only as a community but as a entire world. I have thought of how we affect the world around us but not in this aspect. For every year that passes, we toss out fifty-eight billion disposable cups, two hundred billion liters of water bottles, billions of plastic bags, toxic waste, billions of tons of household waste and more. We bury the waste. We burn the waste. Then we ignore it. It made me think about the waste we create and “get rid of” and how we need to go about things in the future. “Trashed” was filled with terrible truths, which is depressing. This documentary however was also filled with digestible and do-able solutions to the problems we have created and continue to expand into even bigger problems. Agent Orange was contaminated with TCDD, a toxic dioxin compound. Agent Orange’s was a powerful mixture of chemical defoliants. It was given its name from the color of the orange-striped barrels in which it was shipped. The government of Vietnam says that four million of their citizens were exposed to Agent Orange. Three million have suffered diseases. This includes the children exposed. The exposure causes many diseases and genetic mutations. How does Agent Orange tie into the waste we produce? The plastic we produce and waste let out these dioxins into the earth. This poisons the earth. It traps the animals and destroys their habitat and what we do not realize is we are destroying our
