“Is it Worth it to Train New Employees?”

What is one concept that stood out to you in this article? One concept that stood out to me in this article is that the demand for new hire training is essential to growing companies, but more and more companies are looking to export or even get rid of training in some instances all together. “Most major investment banks outsource a chunk of their new employee training to a company called Training The Street, which runs two- to two-and-a-half-week programs emphasizing financial skills (Vanderkam)”. I find it interesting that companies would outsource this interpersonal skill of finding out the weaknesses with potential new hires. I feel that if current employees were to train and interact with the potential new hires it could lead to team building, the company could then get feedback from employees that know the everyday challenges that the job offers. Not to mention finding out the personality of the new hire, (personable, sociable, easy to work with, etc.) is essential in the work place.

What implications does this have for managing your life or managing at work? Speaking first hand from managing at work I have to deal with a great deal of new hires, or potential new hires. Knowing you can hire someone who is trustworthy, responsible, and diligent are all important tools to hiring employees. If some of these crucial steps are being overlooked, then the quality of the employee is going to suffer. The article stated that many new employees tend to leave quickly, “With young people likely to switch jobs frequently…. (Vanderkam). If in-house training were to be done, better reviews and character reviews could be conducted in a real work environment. Trainers and trainees interact seamlessly, character traits are bound to come out.

What needs to change in your life as a result? After reading this article, I feel that as a Human Resources Manager I should look into sending new employees out to be trained by outside companies (outsourcing). This may be more beneficial as a whole since we are not taking away from current employees. Employees are a company’s greatest asset. Therefore, if we were to consider exploring the alternative of outsourcing training needs, it may result in better business strategies and productivity goals.

    When a company spends extra money on developing their employees, they should see many benefits. One of these benefits being a significant drop in turnover rates. Employee development is a combination of education, work experience, work relationships, and an assessment of personality and their abilities to prepare for future careers (Noe, 2013).     I do believe that the company will have to modify its train the trainer approach slightly. I think they will need to have employees that are in charge of training as their job. Instead of having employees (managers) that train new employees, they will have people specifically in charge of training new employees as well as designing the training program to deliver to them.
