Tragedy in Savar
Extra Credit Essay The Tragedy in Savar shows in my opinion what these multinational corporations are all about, the bottom line! Multinationals should be held accountable, they have a responsibility to the people of Savar and other poor countries that they choose to produce their goods in. At the same time multinationals need to keep their investors happy, need to turn a profit quarter after quarter, need to win at all costs. So do I think what happened in Savar is the result of the free market? Absolutely. The truth is it is easy to look at this from a moral standpoint and easily point the finger at these multinationals for allowing these poor working conditions, for choosing to produce their goods in poor countries where the workers are getting paid next to nothing, for not caring enough about the safety of these workers, etc. In reality I’m not sure these multinationals have a choice to do it any other way. We live in a profit driven free market where the bottom line trumps everything else. Companies are evaluated by it, investors are attracted to it, the bottom line is the most important thing and companies are looking for every advantage possible. In a perfect world I would say that the multinationals should learn from this and stay in Savar. They should invest into the production facilities, improve working conditions and safety, and setup a fund for the families who lost loved ones in the incident. The reason I don’t think that will happen is because no one holds these companies accountable. Their reputation in Savar might be ruined but they aren’t the ones buying the products anyway, we are. If the free market is to blame here then we the consumers are of equal blame. Disney has shifted production to another site which is most likely just as poor as Savar with working conditions just as bad. The only way to solve the problem is if consumers stop supporting these large companies who choose to put profit over people. Its hard to write

The video investigative journal would become famous for many things but it is most famously known for exposing sexual predators on the internet. It was in response to the medium of the internet and how predators had a new technology to pray on children. But the Dateline Special that is important to this case is the infamous on that aired on December 17, 1996 (Sethi, 2011). This was the infamous Mattel reporting dealing with its labor force and wages for overseas workers in countries such as China and Indonesia (Sethi, 2011). The damaging piece of information exposed during the Dateline show was underage workers that were required to work long hours with mandatory overtime requirements (Sethi, 2011). This couldn’t have come at a worse time for the corporation who was trying to slash cost with a new, just dusted off CEO of a month looking for spending cuts as much as possible. None the less this is what started the change in how the toy industry specifically the way the toys are manufactured and more importantly by who? The rest of the case will discuss the steps that Mattel took to improve work environment for workers in these overseas factories. I will also attempt to answer all three points over the remainder of this paper;…

A tragedy like this one situation is always unexpected and questions are brought to the surface that no one is prepared for. Such questions would be, what does an employer tell the families of the miners trapped inside the mine? and, what does the employer tell the other employees? Communications such as these must keep the audience in mind and must be handled delicately.…

The McWane story was a very unfortunate series of events that were caused by company negligence. I believe the company decided to make a turn around only because they started to see the negative consequences that were going to happen to them if they did not do so. McWane industries seemed to care little about their employees and the environment in the past and only care now because of liability reasons. They should have made changes before the first incident even occurred. I do believe that they have changed their ways now. They now are more concerned with the consequences of their actions. Regardless of the reason, they are providing a safer environment now and therefore deserve to be operational.…

Can a person's action lead to a tragic consequence for everyone ? There are a lot of situations where humans become involved in certain things and are considered “guilty by association”. In today's society humans face a lot of situations where they think they’re better than someone or vice versa. An author Victor Hugo states, “Society is republic, When an individual tries to lift themselves above others, they are dragged down by the masses, either by ridicule or slander”. Human failings can lead to tragic consequences. I’ve learned this in many ways; one from my personal life with hanging around people who do drugs, and another with the Abigail and John from The Crucible.…

In Greek the word “tragedy” means “goat song”, but the connection between tragedy and goat song is obscure. Perhaps a goat was the prize at some sort of early singing contest in Greece, or perhaps the dancers wore goat skins. One medieval writer ingeniously suggested that tragedy is called goat song because it begins prosperously, as a goat is abundantly hairy in front, and ends wretchedly, as a goat is bare in the rear. Dante Alighieri, whose Divine Comedy proves him to be the greatest poet of the Middle Ages, offered the engaging idea that tragedy is so called because its story is unpleasant and smelly as a goat.…

In Arthur Miller's 1949 essay, "Tragedy and the Common Man," Miller began by saying, "In this age few tragedies are written." This particular essay was published in the New York Times, was also the preface that was prepared for "Death of a Salesman" in 1949. Before Miller's "Death of a Salesman," there was only one type of tragedy—that which fit Aristotle's definition. For Aristotle, plays of tragedy had to revolve around kings, gods, or people of high class. In these classic tragedies, the diction must be elevated and fitting of the characters.

Arthur Miller challenged just about every belief and convention that had previously been accepted about tragic plays, as in Shakespeare's "Hamlet"—which could be considered the paragon of tragedies. In claiming, "The tragic mode is archaic," Miller explains "that the common man is as apt a subject for tragedy in its highest sense as kings were." This very notion that regular people are just as fit to be main characters in a tragedy as royalty was also applied to the audience's understanding of a tragic play. If the play was supposed to be about upper-class people, and was spoken in a vernacular that was only known to the high-bred, how were the common people who saw these plays supposed to comprehend their meaning? The only way for this problem to be solved, according to Miller, was to present a character to whom the audience will readily relate. Miller did this by presenting Willy Loman, the main character of "Death of a Salesman," who was a common workingman with a wife and two kids.

The reason that there is such an absence of tragedies in this day and age, is that "the turn which modern literature has taken toward the purely psychiatric view of life, or the purely sociological," has been one that creates skepticism. With so much thinking involved, and analyzing, no one can really enjoy a play for what it is—pure entertainment. By constantly trying to figure out a reason for why something happened, the…

In the article that I had to research called “Over 30 workers trapped after Chilean Copper Mine Collapse” (Weik, 2010) it talks about what occurred on August 5, 2010 in which the San Jose mine collapsed trapping approximately 30 workers. The article indicated that prior to the collapse a fatal accident occurred in 2007 which closed the mine for a period of time but later opened in the later part of the year. It also detailed that the rescuers were attempting to locate the workers so they would be able to drill their way into the mine in order to provide the workers with food, water, and oxygen but a second collapse occurred during that process. The additional articles I reviewed regarding this report did not provide enough detail regarding the status of the minors and their health but stated more about the company reasons to why this event occurred and providing statements such as “Major mining accidents are uncommon in Chile, the world’s top cooper producer” (Arthur, 2010) and stating “How Chile is the top copper producer in the world so mining accidents are uncommon in when its monitored so closely by authorities” (Soto, 2010). Basically, the articles never really explained why and how this incident occurred the communication was not very effective.…

In September of 2008, the economy started to crash due to the effects of globalizing and free trade. When free trade was set into motion and globalization was started, it caused many people to either make less money, or lose their job completely. In the quote Zoelick says, “... As always, the poor are the most defenseless...” and this statement clearly demonstrates the third-world countries, and the people that were affected by free trade in efforts to globalize the economy. The government’s that were governing people, as well as the international organizations were pursuing the idea that free trade was going to benefit all of the people. Through change of foreign policy and free trade, people’s rights were different and they lost their wages, and in some cases total job loss. The people of the nations were convinced that free trade was in their best interest and also within their national interest. It would help to promote and build other undeveloped countries, while providing economic stability to those striving to produce more for free trade. In developing countries, they were placed at a disadvantage because they were placed in the same economic stream as the big corporations, which caused the corporations to get goods for cheaper and…
