The Army’s “Total Soldier Concept” seeks to highlight soldiers that are well rounded. These soldiers will possess more than the required job, technical and tactical competencies. These soldiers are self-motivated, confident, and perform all duties in accordance with published standards. These soldiers seek out more than the mandated military professional development, often obtaining college degrees in addition to their core duties. Great communication and leadership skills as well as, keen physical abilities are the final pieces one must possess to be a complete puzzle. To some, structure can simply mean there is a general framework of how to get things done. As an NCO, incorporating a structural environment for soldiers will help them to adapt to the monotony of garrison.
This structural environment consist on mentorship, trainings to maintain and increase tactical and technical skills, pursue a college education, attend formal Army courses and appreciation of family time.
• Mentorship, involves an accessible guidance for the soldier. Sharing knowledge and experience will help soldiers identify their own issues (cope with the moral repercussions of their actions, substance abuse, and post-traumatic stress disorder). Providing support to achieve their goals can benefit the entire chain of command long-term.
