Toronto Meeting Reflection
In the course I enjoyed many things, such as the trips we have went on, the ice times, and the small victories we had together as a class. I really like the guest speakers as they gave me the chance to see into the future and the trip to Toronto showed me the wide variety of jobs involved with the hockey industry. I also enjoyed the fake hockey pool that we had, as every morning many of us would gather and check the pool as if it was real.

This week I observed the steps you have to take to ensure you meet all your students demands, one way to do so is attend the annual 504 meeting. 504 meetings are intended to provide teachers a place to discuss their student's educational health and plan lessons for the upcoming year. Mrs. Holland was thankful to have attended one in past years, she told me the meeting consisted of similar topics as the PST meeting but more serious. 504 means that the PST solution has failed so the teachers must come up with other ideas. First they begin by discussing the students grades, where they have excelled verses where they have fallen. Then they look for reasoning behind the misunderstanding such as medical, psychological, or physical problems. Then…

Playing Ice Hockey was a burning passion of mine. It all started in the cold and dense locker room. Practice had just finished up and we were inside the locker room getting undressed. I was a forward on the team and was only ten years old. The team goalie was sick and was not going to be able to make our game the next day. Coach asked “Is anyone willing to play goalie for our game?” and I, the young ten year old boy I was; was the first person to quickly respond saying “I will!” Playing goalie was destined for me, I was a star and very talented.…

The city council meeting could have been interesting if it hadn't dragged on for so long. At first I wasn't sure of what was going on because I couldn't find where they were at on the agenda. I finally found my place when they were doing the announcements and presentations. This part of the meeting took the most time, but I guess it was the most important. They gave six different presentations. The first was a proclamation in recognition of Business Appreciation Week. Four people went up on stage to accept the proclamation and the Pres./ CEO gave a speech. Next was the presentation of a certificate in recognition for Costco Wholesale. The received the BRACE award for "Retail Business of the Year." Dr. Min-Lee Cheng then went up to accept a Proclamation in recognition of "Mosquito and Vector Control and West Nile Virus Awareness Week.…

The AA meeting I attended took place at Hackensack UMC Palisades on a Sunday evening at 7:30 pm in the evening. The meeting was held in a small auditorium and there were about 12 people in attendance, excluding myself. Among the 12 people, there was a women and 11 men. The ages of the people who attended was approximately between the ages of 30-60. Before attending to this meeting, I was expecting to go into a room filled with nervous and agitated people rocking back and forth. My impression of AA and of people with substance abuse mostly came from my own prior experience with population dealing from psychiatric disorders. I was expecting to see a lot of general nervous behaviors. It caught me by surprise to see that most who attended the meeting,…

    Na Meeting Analysis

Upon entering the NA meeting I had mixed feelings. I didn’t know how to come to the meeting knowing my intentions were neither to give nor receive help. I felt like I was an intruder. I didn’t understand why I should betray others or act as if I was an addict who chose not to interact in the healing and recovering process. All of those things pushed me into the door of a meeting and open my mind to the hurt behind the physical appearance of these people. Their stories were heart wrenching. They all wanted help or do be noticed at some point of their lives before they became addicts. Never knowing the decisions they chose to take that first hit would turn their worlds upside down and take their family and friends from them. Forever changing their lives and not knowing if it will ever return to what it once was.…

    City Council Meeting

For my project I visited the Los Alamitos City council. The beginning of the meeting started with a call of order then proceeded to the roll call of the board members. After these steps had taken place the Pledge of Allegiance was said and the meeting began. As each speaker had their turn to speaker about their topic I noticed how democratic it was after a person had given their speech each of the board members voted on the issue and the matter was either passed or declines, it was very similar to direct democracy. Also each speaker was given five minutes which is plenty of time to get your ideas across to the board, and it’s just a long enough time so people don’t get sidetracked or bored. But the only problem that I can see with the five minute rule is if you have too many people speaking at a meeting, not everyone will have their chance to speak. While they’re I noticed that the size of the city council building was a little smaller than expected, because they were unable to sit all the people who attended causing a majority of people to stand in the back during the course of the meeting. There were many issues brought up during the meeting, one of the first issues dealt with the location of Verizon services through Los Alamitos, and the installing and construction that would happen if the city were to install Verizon services. Another important issue that was brought up was the increasing rise in water prices in los Alamitos, which any of the citizens at the meeting talked about and many proposals to the board. An finally one of the Last issues had to deal with trees uprooting sidewalks and roads throughout Los Alamitos that where cased by trees. Out of these three main topics the one that most surprised me was the cracked sidewalks and roads from trees. This most interested me because of the stimulus money that was put into fixing roads in the us has not helped out damaged and pot hole filled roads and sidewalks. These trees should be…

During my practicum I was able to sit in on one PLC meeting. It was a little informal considering the principal was gone and the teachers mostly talked if they wanted to. We went into the teachers lounge and sat around the big table and just talked about who is struggling. We went over what students had troubles reading and how far behind they were. The physical education teacher takes certain students how need extra reading strategies for about twenty minutes. This happens everyday in the classroom I was in and it was always the same people that went for the extra work. Within the classroom that I was in, there were only three students who were in the below average reading line.…

I was a little nervous attending one of these meetings because I didn’t know what to expect but only know from television shows and movies. What is the reality though? I imagined and painted a picture of what an AA meeting would be like. I pictured a room full of people that were obvious addicts, unkept appearances, offensive hygiene and at least one person smelling of alcohol while moving back and forth in the chair. As I entered the room, my perspective laughed at me and as I looked around I was deceived. It was the complete opposite, most of the members of the group were clean, well-kept and looked healthy. I have never been a room full of worried people trying to stay sober because they started the road to sobriety. To keep their…

    Aa Meeting Observation

On Friday, April 5th starting at 8:00pm I walked into St. Peters Catholic Church in Olney, Maryland to witness my first ever open AA meeting. The meeting was being held in the basement area of the church. The room was small and comfortable. The atmosphere was very welcoming and relaxed. A younger gentleman wearing a nice clean button down shirt and khakis, who goes by the name Andy, stands by the door and greets people as they walk in with a big friendly hello. It is then, that you are handed a name tag and a sharpie. Looking around, the furniture is rearranged to better suit the event and what is about to take place. The chairs are formed into a circle, so everyone can get a clear view of each person, it was large enough to fit 15 to 20 chairs but small enough to still be intimate. Before the meeting started, the room filled up with people who all looked very different but were all there for the same reason. The total amount of people that attended the meeting was 13. There were 3 females and 10 males. The group ranged in age from young to old. There were two men who were having a friendly conversation by the snack table, one older gentleman with noticeable gray hair in sweatpants and Harley Davidson t-shirt and a younger looking gentleman wearing jeans and a sweatshirt. There was lots of small talk going on as people found their seats. At 8:00PM the sound of everyone chatting with each other came to a stop when Andy announced that he was going to get started. The room came to a silence and the meeting was kicked off with a prayer. Everyone joined hands. After the prayer was said, Andy asked if there was anyone new joining. There were none. Following that, Andy read a passage from the “Big Book”. It looks just like a bible and the people attending this meeting treat it like one. As the passage was being read, a little more than half of the people were following along in their own copies of…

Field hockey has taught me some of the basic values of life and has changed my morals as well. I learned to respect all players, coaches and referees. I learned that I can be a good player and play hard – yet, still be courteous and kind on the playing field. This sport has taught me how to love myself, my teammates, and to become the best athlete I can be, through important lessons that I can incorporate on and off the field. It will hold a place in my heart even after I can no longer suit up to play in my stinky goalie gear, and I will always appreciate…
