Toddler Room Observation
I went to the Family Focus toddler room on Wednesday, March 8th.
This trip was particularly adventurous! As we pulled up, we noticed that there were fire trucks outside of the day care, as we walked up to the huddles of teachers and children on the sidewalk, they told us that there had been a problem with the stove and that they had been able to smell gas. I would like to point out that I am not entirely sure how this might connect to class, but it seemed like an important event during which I made some observations that might relate to lecture in the coming weeks.
Nothing worth noting happened in the toddler room, but I did notice some interesting occurrences in the infant room. I was sitting next to a baby girl, let’s call her Phoebe, who was sitting in a bouncy seat with toys attached to it all around her. I noticed two distinct noteworthy events, which when combined together raised some questions.

Jing and I both tried to give Phoebe a large object, in my case this large object was a big soft book! Phoebe looked at the book and after hesitating a while she successfully grabbed it. Instead of just picking it up any which way, she by the binding, an area of the book that is thinner, and therefore easier to handle. This was a moment of accommodation. Phoebe had understood that picking up this large book was not the same as picking up a tiny toy car because the two objects have different properties. Phoebe based her interactions with objects on their properties, which is a prime example of

The experiment performed by Judy S. DeLoache concluded how the more noticeable an object is, the harder it becomes for children to appreciate the object as a symbol for something other than what it already is, making it obviously more difficult for the younger participants of the experiment that are attracted to the object to detect its relation to the different rooms it stands for. The hypothesis concluded by Delouche led to many other intriguing ideas of what the experiment produced, like how if the attention the child has on the object minimizes, the object as a symbol increases. However, by increasing a child’s attention to an object by letting them play with it, decreases the child’s use of that object, and their performance in the experiment to find the model in the room leads to a harder understanding of it as a symbol. Children can be so intrigued by an object that they then fail to acknowledge of what the object could potentially represent.…

One of the greatest things about college is the fact that what we learn is tied to observable experiences that we have. I have seen this most in my time at Benjamin Franklin Elementary school, where I observe a Kindergarten classroom. This brings about the point that I did not get to experience a toddler and preschool learning environment. I first noticed the curricula in the classroom, and how much it matched up with the curricula we discussed in class. Their curriculum was very hands on, open, and positive. It is very important to keep the children motivated and included. My teacher followed this by encouraging open discussion, where every child’s opinion was heard. My teacher often used the approach of behaviorism, complimenting and rewarding…

She was leaving campus before the last hour of classes and all I could do was offer a weak smile as they left. After that I was back in front of the classroom mentally preparing myself to walk into our classroom. To my surprise, the hustle and bustle of the class and my classmates had more or less subsided and business seemed to resume as it normally would at the end of the day. Some students were itching for the day to be over; others were ready for the last class of the day, earth science with our teacher Mrs. Dortmund. She was a very pleasant woman with a serious love as rocks and minerals, as to be expected. She was also known for having very little patience for distractions, which I had no doubt influenced my classmates’ current behavior. This unspoken agreement to move on with the day as nothing had happened earlier in the afternoon meant we were able to follow up on our unit about volcanoes and earthquakes with ease. Despite the image of Katrina leaving campus crying still popping into my head, by the time class had ended I was feeling well…

It was playtime for the one year old boy. There were all sorts of toys. The playroom was very small. There was a huge toy chest full to the top with toys. On the wall there was a body length mirror. This was the little boys favorite place to play. He would also play with some of the other toys like blocks, cars, stuffed animals and other things. No matter what he grabbed he always brought it in front of the mirror.…

On the morning of October 12th, I observed an early childhood education center. It was located in a rural town off of a busy road. The facility had roughly 30 children attending while I was present. There were multiple rooms in the center, the rooms were sectioned by the age of the child. Each room had age appropriate toys and structures for play. My time spent at the facility was spent observing the health, safety and nutrition concepts that have been discussed in class. It was easy to look around and see the health and safety components, the nutrition required an interview with staff members to understand their beliefs and how they serve the meals.…

After observing the 4th and 5th grade Special Day Class, I asked the principal Mr. Valencia if there was a possibility to observe a 4th or 5th grade General Education class. He set up my observation in Mr. Garcia’s class. It was a pleasure to be there since he was recognized as the Teacher of the Year, a few years ago. The observation was conducted during the whole school day on October 20, 2017 from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. This is a big class with 14 boys and 15 girls, a total of 29 students. The classroom has a neat environment with a couple of boards displaying the class assignments. One of the boards had banners of different universities and a short composition about it. The other board exhibited web maps of Charlotte’s Web the book they had been…

It is about 9:30am, half an hour after the children have come inside and had a short circle time with a few songs and calendar. I enter the classroom, and am amazed as always by the atmosphere within. It is calm, but busy. There is a constant low level of noise– it is not absolutely quiet, nor is it loud, but there is simply a hum of low voices as they work and talk. I make my way to the observation chair and take it all in. There is something about the feel of a classroom full of children deep at work that is so inspiring.…

Getting started, I collaborated with the class instructor by asking her if there were questions that the moms tend to ask on a regular basis. Common questions included: how do they know their babies are getting enough breastmilk, when to start solids, and how do they start preparing to go back to work. I also ask her about the different cultures and the ages of the infants that usually come to class.…
