To What Extent Should Tom Have Entered The Haunted Home
Having Some Fun
Tom sawyer was an ordinary boy. He disliked work, school, and bathing. He liked swimming, playing, and procrastinating. One day, Tom and his friend Huckleberry discovered that there was a large amount of money hidden in the haunted house, and guarded by a drunk half-blooded criminal Indian with a knife. Naturally, as an ordinary boy, he tried to get in. Everyone agrees that Tom was young. Although some say Tom should have entered the haunted house, others have decided he should not have. Tom should have entered the haunted house for these three reasons: for the money, for the fame, and for the girl.
The first reason Tom should have entered the haunted house is for the money. Tom was a poor boy from a poor family. He didn’t

He might be the wealthiest boy in America, not to mention the extreme popularity at school! He would be surrounded by people, old and young, who wanted to be on his good side, to get a share of the treats. Tom would be as popular as a candy salesman. He could essentially do whatever he wanted, because, even if he got in trouble, he would be able to bribe himself out with the money. He would be known as the boy who turned in the criminal Indian, and he would probably receive a reward, thus increasing his already ridiculous amount of money. Tom should have entered for the fame.
The third and final reason Tom should have entered the haunted house is for the girl. Becky Thatcher, his beloved sweetheart, would surely like him all the better for his fame. Having money, he would be able to buy her gifts, and she would be sure to like him even more. If he entered the haunted house, his social life would be much improved in the female area.
Tom should have gone into the haunted house because he would be wealthy, famous, and popular. He would have more money than anyone else in the state, and he could have as much fun as he wanted. Although it was a little dangerous, the money was worth the

And he was willing to go lengths for it. This of course, is foolish. Within certain parameters, a healthy work ethic is very important, but when it comes to such obsession Tom is in the wrong, which he later realizes in the story. At this point in time in the story he acts irresponsibly, and climbs out onto the ledge, even though moments before he had admitted to himself the absurdity of this idea. He rationalizes it to himself, saying it will take “…less than two minutes” and “…would make a good story at the office…” however, we know this is in no way enough justification for risking your life.…

I would say at least a million dollars would be at risk for me to do what they did. I say a million because they are following Injun Joe a killer who holds grudges and that is dangerous and scary. For me to put my life on the line for money, there would have to be a lot of money so it would make it worth it. I think Tom and Huck were a little daring when they went after the money because part of the money was Injun Joe’s and I don’t think he would be to happy to see all the money he has saved up be stolen by a bunch of kids. It makes it worse that Tom ratted on him because Injun Joe would then have more than one reason to go after…

The reason that this statement is relevant to the paper, is because a similar events happens in the Poltergeist. The spirit in the house separates Carol Anne from her family to benefit the other souls in limbo. The spirit also causes feelings son to be attacked by a tree and a clown in order to direct everyone's attention away from the daughter. On the other hand, another difference is that the home in The Haunting of Hill House was a victorian style, while the home in Poltergeist is a American craftsman. Tom symbolizes everything wrong with the upper class in The Great Gatsby. His American Dream was solely based around “entitlement and excluding those not entitled’’ ( Hacht 264-276 ). This explains his constant pursuit for finding where Gatsby gained his wealth and ridiculing him whenever the time arose. The problem with Tom lies in the irony of it all though. He stands as a moral judge even though he is committing adultery with Myrtle. Because of this not even Tom is living the American Dream. In the article “The Great Gatsby and the American Dream’’ the author states the following about Tom: “He displays a false sophistication based on pretense. He has little genuine affection for Myrtle: It is her husband who mourns her death. Tom did not achieve the American Dream, he was born to wealth and proved unworthy of it’’. This gives evidence to the fact that although Tom was born to wealth, he has no right to judge people such as Gatsby on morality considering that he cheated on his wife, and didn’t have the decency to mourn Myrtle's death. He maintains self morale by sleeping with women that aspire to be like him so he feels a sense of superiority. This superiority in turn allows him to “maintain the illusion that he is a good and important man”( “Critical Essays,’’2011 ). Tom believes he is living the American Dream but is nothing more than a corrupt man who was born…

Tom Walker makes a deal with the devil, turning him from rags to riches. He quickly becomes rich after opening a bank with the fortune he gathered from the devil. Tom buys everything he wants and before long “began to feel anxious about those of the next. He thought with regret on the bargain he had made with his black friend, and set his wits to work to cheat him out of the conditions. He became, therefore, all of the sudden, a violent churchgoer”(Irving 13). Tom no longer was content with his deal of selling his soul to the devil. He began to see that his freedom and his life was more important than his big house and money. The fact that Irving included this shows how his quality of life really did not improve as he was trying to. The romantic value of freedom over goods shines through with Tom’s realization that he wanted his life back. This trend of regret continues after Stephen Benet’s Jabez Stone gets fed up with all of the things that happen to him. He feels he is the most unlucky person in the world and makes a deal with the devil so that he can have good luck for (ultimately) ten years before the devil takes him. The deal makes Jabez have good crop turnout, strong horses, and good luck, but also extreme apprehensiveness “For every day, when he gets up, he thinks, ‘There’s one more night gone,’ and every night he lies down he thinks of the black pocketbook and the soul of Miser Stevens, and it makes him sick at heart”(Benet 310). Stone cannot bear the fact the he can count down the days until his death. The benefits of the deal with the devil no longer help Jabez and he realizes that his freedom is more important than having nice. He cannot enjoy his life no matter what while he knows his fate, showing romanticism’s emphasis on freedom for self realization. Jabez’s good luck is quickly overshadowed when he realizes he doesn’t have his life anymore,…
