During the wine scene in the story, the king exhibits his cruel nature by forcing Hop Frog to drink the wine. Even though the king knows that Hop Frog is not comfortable doing it he still makes him, knowing very well how it affects Hop Frog. The other seven ministers do not take pity of Hop Frog, even they smirk and laugh at the king’s horribly cruel stunt. Even when Trippetta falls on her knees and begs the king to stop his merciless joke, he throws her aside like a rag doll and throws the remaining wine onto her.…

Freddy Krueger, cyber bullies, and your primary care physician all have one glaring commonality- and this the fact that they all disguise themselves behind masks. In the late 1930s and early 1940s the world was shaken by the persecution that radiated from Nazi Germany. It was this persecution that ignited global warfare in what is now referred to as World War II. The strict governmental enforcement of unification amongst soldiers was seen across the boards as all soldiers wore matching uniforms and had similarly matching haircuts. For many civilians at the time, questions of morality surrounding the justification of wartime murder troubled them. It was shortly after this…

Things are not always what they might seem to be. Sometimes the line between appearance and reality seem to blur. On television nowadays the concept of deception, lies, backstabbing is presented consistently, and repeatedly; especially on reality shows. A very common saying, "things aren't always what they seem," comes to mind because it is hard to distinguish between an appearance and the reality. Appearance versus reality is genuinely experienced in plays, novels and books which portray magnificent examples. Every human being has specific talents and gifts but those offerings all go out the window when one tries to change his appearance. God gave everyone one face but the difficulties and challenges of life causes the construction of another to influence others to their liking. In the book Macbeth by William Shakespeare and the fairytale Little Red Riding Hood by Charles Perrault the concepts of appearance vs. reality are on full display. Macbeth is portrayed as an honourable solider who is willing to give his own life for the country but in reality, he is full of greed and will do anything to be king. In contrast, there is the dirty keenly wolf who is targeting a little girl by changing his whole appearance just to have another meal. The portrayal of appearance versus reality can be seen in both these two texts through various and deceiving ways such as; motivation behind actions, outer appearance versus innernity and the end result.…

Tom Walker makes a deal with the devil, turning him from rags to riches. He quickly becomes rich after opening a bank with the fortune he gathered from the devil. Tom buys everything he wants and before long “began to feel anxious about those of the next. He thought with regret on the bargain he had made with his black friend, and set his wits to work to cheat him out of the conditions. He became, therefore, all of the sudden, a violent churchgoer”(Irving 13). Tom no longer was content with his deal of selling his soul to the devil. He began to see that his freedom and his life was more important than his big house and money. The fact that Irving included this shows how his quality of life really did not improve as he was trying to. The romantic value of freedom over goods shines through with Tom’s realization that he wanted his life back. This trend of regret continues after Stephen Benet’s Jabez Stone gets fed up with all of the things that happen to him. He feels he is the most unlucky person in the world and makes a deal with the devil so that he can have good luck for (ultimately) ten years before the devil takes him. The deal makes Jabez have good crop turnout, strong horses, and good luck, but also extreme apprehensiveness “For every day, when he gets up, he thinks, ‘There’s one more night gone,’ and every night he lies down he thinks of the black pocketbook and the soul of Miser Stevens, and it makes him sick at heart”(Benet 310). Stone cannot bear the fact the he can count down the days until his death. The benefits of the deal with the devil no longer help Jabez and he realizes that his freedom is more important than having nice. He cannot enjoy his life no matter what while he knows his fate, showing romanticism’s emphasis on freedom for self realization. Jabez’s good luck is quickly overshadowed when he realizes he doesn’t have his life anymore,…

In today's society, there are many factors that play into what is acceptable and what is frowned upon. There are also many roles that play into what we as citizens want the public to know. In the poem, We Wear The Mask published by Paul Laurence Dunbar in 1896, society as a whole is used as the subject of the word “we.” This “we” that Dunbar talks about consists of several characteristics as a whole, but three important ones that stand out over the others are deceitful, cautious, and mysterious.…

Deep in the collective conscious of every culture lays a fascination with physical or metaphorical alterations through the use of masks. Traditionally, masks have been an indispensable part of religious expression, the performing arts, and the battlefield. The many uses have been adopted to assist in becoming someone other than themselves. In our society the term, mask, may be used as an allegory to indicate a hidden agenda or to identify a false perception that is given to the world by someone. It may be characterized as our id, from Freud’s logic, taking over when we unconsciously revert to our defense mechanism of proving that we are strong enough to survive any challenges; even though underneath our masks we are overwhelmed and weeping in frustration. Masks are described in Carl Jung’s theory of multiple archetypes in his essay “The Personal and The Collective Unconscious.” Furthermore, archetypes are used to identify and unveil the masks worn by the narrating lawyer in Herman Melville’s “Bartleby the Scrivener.” The contents of the collective unconscious by Jung are represented in the lawyer’s character symbolized through three masks: God Complex, Father Complex and Mother Complex.…
