To Kill A Mockingbird: A Short Story
A bang outside my window startles me awake. I open my eyes and look at the clock. It reads 12:47am which confuses me ‘cause it’s brighter than usual in my room. I get out of bed and shuffle to the window to see flames lickin’ Miss Maudie’s. I notice that it’s quiet in my house so I sneak to the door. Quietly scufflin’ through the halls, I check the rest of the rooms to see if Dad is still here. All of ‘em are quiet and empty so I don’t try to be quiet as I walk back to my window where I have the best view of Miss Maudie’s house. By this time there are many people runnin’ in and out of Miss Maudie’s house trying to collect some of her sentimental belongings. It seems like the whole neighborhood and even county is helping out. There’s three firetrucks in the street but to my terror not enough …show more content…
It feels amazing to know that he’s finally seen me. The fiery smoke starts to choke me and as I’m getting closer to Scout and I spread out the blanket in my arms, and lay it across her shoulders when I reach her. I stand there waiting for a response, but she doesn’t turn around. She must’ve be too cold and scared to notice me. I feel a warmth surge in my body despite the cold as I walk back to the porch. It feels good to know that I’ve finally done something for someone, especially Scout. I stroll inside, take a long breath, and head down the hallway to my bedroom. A nasty cough comes over me from all the smoke in my lungs. I make it to bed and slip off my boots. I change into my night clothes and walk back to my window. The fire is out now and the kids are heading back to their own house now, and I can’t help but feel a longing for them. I want them to know me and not be afraid anymore. That might happen one day but not today. When the fire trucks start heading back to where they came from, I tiredly walk back to my bed. I feel the warm blankets as they wrap around my body, and I fall into a deep

Toni Cade Bambara The puddle had frozen over, and me and Cathy went stompin in it. The twins from next door, Tyrone and Terry, were swingin so high out of sight we forgot we were waitin our turn on the tire. Cathy jumped up and came down hard on her heels and started tapdancin. And the frozen patch splinterin every which way underneath kinda spooky. “Looks like a plastic spider web,” she said. “A sort of weird spider, I guess, with many mental problems.” But really it looked like the crystal paperweight Granny kept in the parlor. She was on the back porch, Granny was, making the cakes drunk. The old ladle drippin rum into the Christmas tins, like it used to drip maple syrup into the pails when we lived in the Judson’s woods, like it poured cider into the vats when we were on the Cooper place, like it used to scoop buttermilk and soft cheese when we lived at the dairy. “Go tell that man we ain’t a bunch of trees.” “Ma’am?” “I said to tell that man to get away from here with that camera.” Me and Cathy look over toward the meadow where the men with the station wagon’d been roamin around all mornin. The tall man with a huge camera lassoed to his shoulder was buzzin our way. “They’re makin movie pictures,” yelled Tyrone, stiffenin his legs and twistin so the tire’d come down slow so they could see. “They’re makin movie pictures,” sang out…

They rode the train to Washington, and when they arrived, Ole, Hilda 's uncle, and Thora, her cousin was waiting for them. As soon as Hilda saw her cousin she felt embarrassed because of how she looked. She did not have on nice clothes like Thora. When they arrived at Thora 's house Hilda saw all the nice things they had, and wished she had them too. She was still excited though because she knew she was going to see her new home the next day; but, little did Hilda know that her new house was an old house with a dirty yard. When Hilda saw the house she became very sad. It took a lot of cooperation and patience, but they fixed up the house and made it look better. Hilda and John found out that they had a creek and a maple tree on their property. They all went on an adventure, and Lois got stung by nettles. They went so far into the woods that they got lost, and could barely find their way back home. Even though their new home was not what they wanted it to be, they were starting to get used to it. They liked the brook; the trees and they even found an old shack far back in the woods. Hilda said the maple tree belonged to her, and she believed the brook sang to her.…

In the midst of one mild night, i was still, on the rocker seat out on the front porch. There was a a bit of dusky reflection from the upstairs windows. I could hear the crickets and their very soothing sounds to my ears, leaving me to reflect in utter peace. Sometimes, i go here every evening to have a moment to myself, taking pleasure in the serenity and hushed noises down the street. Nostalgia comes across my thoughts as I wonder of what it would have been like with Scout and Jem’s mother around. If only the children and I, especially Scout so that she could get a clear picture of her could see her one last time. As I paint her in my head, I remember how she was and am grateful. Her sweetness, beauty and devotion to justice as well as to the family were always visible, ever since i saw her for the first time, when i was first elected to the state legislature. It’s a pity you can’t find many good-hearted citizens like that these days in our small world.…

I glanced up to see my father’s clenched fist raised above his shoulder, ready to strike again. Behind him, the sturdy frame of my Uncle Jed stood tall against the off-white walls. My father’s grimacing face and angered eyes swung to look at him, and he released his firm grip on my collar. I took the swift opportunity and retreated to my room. I lay down on my rickety single bed closing my eyes.…
