This I Believe- Type of Leader
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” ~ John Quincy Adams

I’d like to lead with inspiration, honesty, integrity, fairness, creativity, dedication, humility and a sense of humor, as these are the values that are most important to me. I want to inspire others to dream big and rise to their fullest potential. To do this I need to be honest in all that I do and be a person of integrity by being the same both on the inside and outside. I’d need to be fair in dealing with my followers on a consistent and just basis because knowing the facts and hearing everyone out before passing judgment is key. I’d want to be a creative leader so that I could lead my followers in different directions and show them things they may have never seen. Dedication would be held to a higher standard than most of my other values, as it’s something I believe to be a necessity in a teamwork type of environment. I would not only hold myself to a higher standard of dedication, but my followers as well. I’d also want to lead with humility so that it was known that I don’t find myself to be any better or worse than other members of the team. Last, but certainly not least, I’d want to lead with a sense of humor. I’d use my sense of humor to not only relieve tension and boredom, but also to energize my followers. A sense of humor can foster camaraderie, which is something my team and I would always be striving for.
Most importantly, as a leader I want to use the situational approach in all that I do. I find it very important to acknowledge that different situations require and demand different types of leadership. I want to be adaptable and be able to lead my team in any situation while being both supportive and adapting my leadership style to both the situation and the individual. I resemble the relationship leadership behavior more than any other, meaning that I’m very people oriented and I try to make subordinates feel

My leadership philosophy is about making genuine connections to people. In order to influence people to be great leaders, all the key factors should be tapped in to in some capacity. I make sure my actions speak louder than my word. I lead by example by rolling up my sleeves and showing team members I am not just an army civilian but a part of the team. This philosophy applies to my life whether at work or home. I credit these key factor as the core of becoming a great and effective…

“Real leadership is leaders recognizing that they serve the people that they lead.” This quote, spoken by Pete Hoekstra, speaks volumes to the true essence of what it means to be a leader. Leadership is all about the people. Many people incorrectly assume that being a leader means that the people you lead are there to serve you. This presumption could not be more inaccurate. Being a leader means serving your teammates and being worthy of their respect and cooperation. I believe that Hoekstra’s quote applies to all forms of leadership- from being a captain of a sports team to being a Lead Scholar.…

Before I had some interest in becoming a leader, but I did not really have the drive and confidence to carry out a leadership position. However, during my junior year of high school, I was selected to attend a leadership camp, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). There was a specific keynote speaker at RYLA and his motivational speech gave me the motivation and determination to become a leader and make great changes. His statement still sticks to me today; I live life by this statement, “Success is in the struggle.” Now, I have taken on many leadership positions and have inspired others to become a leader. I inspire others by leading by example, and encouraging them to take a step outside of their comfort zone. I also inspire by building…

My personal philosophy of leadership is to set an example, treat people as they want to be treated, be accountable, listen actively and develop effective communication. Having a positive attitude and celebrating even the smallest of wins, is a part of my philosophy as well. I believe that a leader should be able to handle problems in a democratic way and be able to lead, trust and respect all employees. Changes occur in all organizations and as a leader I will be able to assist employees to be prepared for these changes and assist the organization with implementing those changes. As…

I would strive to guide and motivate the team to accomplish the objectives given to us by our superiors. Displaying a compatible leadership style during this process would be ideal. However I would overall try to adapt the style according to the nature and needs of the employee I am interacting with. This would be in hopes of spurring on the individuals of my team to accomplish their ultimate workforce potential. Providing direction, paying attention to their needs and basic human nature while keeping the objectives of the company at the forefront of my focus would be essential to achieving this…

The time for a leader to show his or her true worth is when they are faced with their greatest adversity. To me there are few better at this feat than Winston Churchill. For a leader to be followed they must lead. One of my favorite quotes about leadership is “A leader without followers is a man taking a walk” (Unknown). This uncredited quote is highly propagated and gets to the heart of leadership.…

My personal leadership philosophy is best described in an article authored by Alan Murray where he states, “Leadership is less about your needs, and more about the needs of the people and the organization you are leading. Leadership styles are not something to be tried on like so many suits, to see which fits. Rather, they should be adapted to the particular demands of the situation, the particular requirements of the people involved and the particular challenges facing the organization.” A good leader is committed to continually improving their communication skills in the effort to foster collaboration and facilitate relationships.…
