Theta Story
Use this space to write your own Theta story to share with the PNM during preference night. A few questions to think about: What makes Theta special to you? What is your favorite part of Theta? What makes Theta different from all the other sororities (in a good way)?
Joining a sorority was always something that I had considered but with the stereotypes and stigmas surrounding Greek life, I felt as though I wouldn’t be accepted. Acceptance has is something I always strived to have and in grade school it was something that I was never granted. That is just the way life was, it resulted in negative impacts to myself. Throughout school, I was well known for being the target of jokes and pranks and they were always things that I just brushed off in school, but secretly built up inside of me until it hit me with a massive wave of insecurities and depression. My parents never really understood what I was going through and were major contributors to my insecurities and depression because they constantly reminded me as to how disappointed in me they were since I wasn’t like my other two sisters. Which furthered my passion and decision to choose a school father away from the negativity in my life. I had the power to leave and I did.

My roommate had a joined a sorority and would tell me all the amazing things that sisterhood has brought to her and I envied her for it. Seeing all the joy in her life really made me want to join, but due to my insecurities, I knew that I would not be able to make it through formal recruitment. So, I discussed my thoughts and opinions with her and she had briefly mentioned COB and that felt like something that I would be able to do. However, time went on and I missed the opportunity for Fall

The reading Sister Act, by Evan Wrigth, is a narrative showing the different points of views and ideals students have integrated about sororities and fraternities, mostly the perspective of female college students. This story takes place in Ohio State Columbus, during the 1950s and 60s. With a large population of 35,000 undergrads, as it is said in the reading, commonly college students tend to join groups to integrate themselves in a social community, the typical American groups where you get drunk and forget about all of your responsibilities for a night to wake up the next day regretting everything. These particular organizations tend to put high standards in their members and represent a high and recognized status as well, "Sorority members…

This is Abigayd Cienfuegos, we met at the campus visit to UTSA last Friday. I wanted to thank you once again for coming with your team, and let us get to know more about Ernst & Young and about your team. It was really interesting to learn more about the friendly culture and the work environment at the firm. Especially learn that as interns we will receive training, and guidance on how to proceed with the assignments we are assigned to. As I told you last Friday I am currently taking Federal Income Taxation. I am also taking auditing and I remember that you mentioned you also help with the audit side, so I wanted to ask you if you based your decision to do taxes on the classes, or something else? As you seemed to like both audit and Taxation.…

My name is Tevin Hamilton. I am from Topeka, Kansas. This semester I will attend KU for my first semester of my sophomore year. I attended Barton County Community College on a tennis scholarship last year. Last year should have been a great opportunity for me to improve my game as well as improve my grades in the classroom. Unfortunately, my coach was reprimanded for athletic misconduct; he would skip my men's practice after personally instructing every girl on our women's tennis team, which I thought highly discriminated my teammates and I. Honestly, I never thought I would come to the University of Kansas or even think about joining a fraternity. However, after talking with some of the brothers in Sigma Pi I feel like I would fit right in. Sigma Pi seems like a really great opportunity to not only socialize and enjoy my college experience here at KU, but also join a brotherhood, make friends I will have for the rest of my life, and become a part of something very few people have the opportunity to do.…

As the year progressed I became accustomed to the tight nit ship that was run by cheer phi. But to my surprise there was a turn of events. After our second football game the cheer captain warmed the frozen grimaced lump in her chest, where her heart should be. She asked the whole team if they wanted to go out to a party so we can bond. I must admit I was taken aback but her sudden change of heart. To me her out of the blue interest in the new girls stunned me. Nevertheless I chose not to go simply because I had no desire…

The first step to constructing something is always the foundation. My freshman year will be the foundation for the continuation of my college education and experience. This year will be a clean state, an empty container, a fresh beginning. I have the opportunity to gratify it with whatever I desire in hopes of enriching my persona. My initial week of college, I will be presented with an amalgam of opportunities and organizations to become involved with varying from Greek life to intramural rugby to student government. I plan on going through the recruitment process in the fall to become a member of a sorority. A common misapprehension about joining a sorority is that you are purchasing your friends; conversely this is not the case. A sorority is a wonderful organization to get involved…

Sororities are commonly known as a college social club or organization for women, with particular distinction given to the African American sororities. Brought about at the time in history when traditional roles of women were being challenged, the founders of the first black sororities had to overcome the stereotypical views of sexism as well. They were considered unique, although college wasn’t really an option for African American’s. Within society they were being treated in rejection because they were black. They wanted to have an organization that would be called sisterhood and ties into their community. Nine dedicated women wanted peace, sisterhood and wanted to become leaders amongst their communities so they formed the first African American sorority in 1908 called Alpha Kappa Alpha. With over a quarter of a millions members in the black sororities numbers are increasing over the years. They continue to be a part of their communities and educate youth in their community. When actual Greek letters were formed for sororities and fraternities white letter groups didn’t think black fraternity groups would be capable of understanding the meanings of the letters and Greek study as they did.…

Joining National Junior Honor Society could result in new opportunities that pertain to my future , help me get into college, teach me things and give me the opportunity to help other people besides myself. In hopes of becoming a member of this honor society, I would fully dedicate myself to participating in the club. I would do my best to fulfill my duties as a member like attending Homecoming, tutoring, food and clothing drives, fundraisers and service projects whatever they may be. I want to be in this society because I hope it will teach me the fundamentals of the future such as leadership and cooperation. I feel as though I could be a fundamental asset to the upbringing of this honor society. I hope that I will be able to prolong my experience as a member all through the rest of high school thus giving me the edge to get ahead to college. This club could help me make friends as well. Joining the honor society would help me get acquainted with more teachers who would help me get accepted and admitted into the right college and the right future. This honor society could prepare me for the upcoming future in that it could teach me to become a more punctual and successful person in society. I believe I could be an adamant member because I challenge myself constantly, strive towards new goals, and have maintained near academic perfection since kindergarten. When I was younger I participated in a local spelling and I got all the way to the top; unfortunately, I failed to win because I misspelled the word “holiday.” From that day forward I committed that word to memory so that I would never make such a foolish mistake again. I learned that day that I should not strive for total perfection but for my very best and that is what I can offer if chosen to be a fellow member. I was chosen as a candidate to display the academic prestige but I believe I can offer so much more like exemplary efforts of leadership,…

Is Greek life (X) beneficial (Y)? Greek life at colleges or universities are very important and beneficial for a students’ four years of college. Many people that have not done their research fully or participated in a sorority/ fraternity will pass judgment about them by stereotyping them to be this awful organization but in reality they are a lot more then meets the eye. They serve a good purpose for these young adults’ futures. It not only will be beneficial in terms of their future careers but also help them grow as individuals. It is a strong organization formed for bigger reasons then most are aware of. If it wasn’t such an excellent source of connections and character building then why would thousands of people throughout the United States and my own university (Arizona State University) waste their time and money?…
