“Theseus was, of course, bravest of the brave, as all heroes are; but, unlike other heroes, he was as compassionate as he was brave, and a man of great intellect as well as great bodily strength,(Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes). This is a quote about the Grecian hero, Theseus. The quote itself describes him with great accuracy, because he is the greatest Greek hero. There are three reasons why. First of all, Theseus put others before himself. When it was time for fourteen Athenians to venture into the labyrinth and face inevitable death at the hands of a Minotaur, he felt it was not right. King Minos’s only human son, Androgeos was killed(AncientHistory.com says there are two versions of his death, one of the Athenians killing him out of jealousy, and the other saying they had no involvement), and King Minos nagged the entire kingdom until they agreed to a chosen punishment by Minos. Theseus volunteered to go as one of the tributes, to experience the infliction of the punishment King Minos chose. Some versions say that cows were demanded as well. The Persian Wars raged on, and Athens was on the losing side. Being exiled, Theseus retreated to an island named Skyros, where he was warmly welcomed. The king felt immensely threatened by Theseus, so he betrayed him and pushed Theseus off of a cliff. Athens did not go to get his body, and he was buried in Skyros. In the wars, multiple Athenians said to have seen Theseus’s ghost on the battlefield, and he was believed to have been responsible for Athens’s victory against the Persians. The Athenian general, Kimos, was appointed by the Oracle to retrieve Theseus’s bones and bury him properly.
