WHO IS THE HERO OF THE STORY?
A hero is often defined as someone that demonstrates courage, performs brave deeds, and displays noble qualities. Personally, I think that this definition can be applied to both Kevin and Maxwell due to the fact that they have both faced many difficult obstacles with the qualities of a hero. However, if only one character from the book, Freak the Mighty were to be chosen and defined as the hero of the story, I believe that Kevin would best represent the title, hero.

Before Maxwell and Kevin became close friends, Max was known as an impulsive, violent, and unsafe individual because of his careless actions. Max had even said himself, “I had a way of saying things with my fists and my feet” confirming that he expressed his feelings quite physically. Nevertheless, when the boys became one as Freak the Mighty, it influenced the way Maxwell dealt with things. For example, he learned to control his temper and using his incredibly great speed and strength to protect his loved ones. In other words, he developed a skill to use his strengths rightfully. Furthermore, Freak constantly encouraged Maxwell to do well in his education. This helped Max overcome his negative mindset on how he was brainless and never attempted to try by using his Learning Disorder as an excuse.
Max as a young child grew up in an environment full of negativity owing to the fact that his father was a criminal and he had a learning disability. He had been constantly faced with judgement as people worried in fear about how Max might turn out like his own father. This leads to my last and final reason. Freak, the boy with a physical disability was the first to give Max a chance that no other was ever willing to give. This allowed Maxwell to experience friendship and love giving a whole new perspective in life.
