The Values In The Boy Scouts Of America
Since an early age, the Boy Scouts of America has instilled the values of honesty, respect, and how to get along with others. As I assimilated the Scout Law and Oath into my core principles I saw how it led me through everyday life. The values I learned while working towards my Eagle Scout, such as outdoor skills, the desire to serve, leading effectively, and the chance to grow as a person, have molded me into the man I am today.
Scouting has been a large part of my life. Ever since I came home that day in first grade with a flyer for Cub Scouts, I have remained active in the scouting program. I attend meetings on a regular basis and partake in as many outings as my schedule allows. This multitude of adventures has opened me up to many different experiences that would have never been possible without scouting. One such event was my Ordeal. In the Boy Scouts of America there is an organization called the Order of the Arrow, also known as the Brotherhood of Cheerful Service. To become a member one must first be elected by their fellow scouts. Following this election candidates must undergo self-discovery and arduous labor during a time known as the Ordeal. During my time as a member, the different roles of service I have undertaken in this distinctive society have taught me an important lesson. Throughout the process of brainstorming, planning, organizing, and working, many lessons presented themselves. One of the largest takeaways for me was learning how much time and effort a leader must put out to create any such event. These difficult tasks were made easier due to the effectiveness of the NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training) program that I went to in the course of my time with the Boy Scouts. During it I learned many techniques that have enabled me to become a better leader for not only my good but for those around
