“Liberal” Vs “Conservative” Comparison Chart
This chart is taken from studentnewsdaily.com (2005) and seems to be a pretty fair representation. I have edited the format to improve readability.
Remember: This is subjective social science. (Subject to debate and interpretation.) -Mr. B.

General Philosophies “LIBERALS” - believe in government action to achieve equal opportunity and equality for all, and that it is the duty of the State to alleviate social ills and to protect civil liberties and individual and human rights. Believe the role of the government should be to guarantee that no one is in need. Believe that people are basically good. Liberal policies generally emphasize the need for the government to solve people’s problems. (Most are DEMOCRATS) “CONSERVATIVES” - believe in personal responsibility, limited government, free markets, individual liberty, “traditional American values” and a strong national defense. Believe the role of government should be to provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own goals. Conservative policies generally emphasize empowerment of the individual to solve problems. (Most are REPUBLICANS)

Views on Specific Topics of Debate: ISSUE
LIBERAL
CONSERVATIVE
Abortion
A fetus is not a human life.
The decision to have an abortion is a personal choice of a woman regarding her own body and the government should stay out of it. Women should be guaranteed the right to a safe and legal abortion, including partial birth abortion.

Human life begins at conception. Abortion ends the life of a human being. Support legislation to prohibit partial birth abortions, called the “Partial Birth Abortion Ban.”

Affirmative Action
Due to prevalent racism in the past, minorities were deprived of the same education and employment opportunities as whites. We need to make up for that. Support affirmative action based on the belief that racism is still a problem in America. Minorities still lag behind whites

James Farney describes North American conservatism as an ideology focused on reacting to progressivism, resisting any changes from the perceived natural and historical. The three major areas of change that concern conservatives are the breakdown of the community, the breakdown of laissez-faire capitalism, and the breakdown of traditional family and gender roles. Each of these concerns maps onto one of the three branches of modern conservatism: traditionalists are primarily concerned with the community, laissez-faire conservatives (fiscal conservatives) are primarily concerned with government intervention into the economy and the social conservatives are primarily concerned with the changing nature of gender and family roles. Of these three…

    a. The Mexican American community participation into the war effort was a result of the hardships that they faced. The democratic principles of President Roosevelt's Four Freedoms did not find their way into the minorities. Mexican Americans were deeply affected by constant discrimination. While it is true that the war created many opportunities for training and advancement in the industries involved in war production, these were given to the Anglo community. During this time, there was also a high need of housing and most Mexican Americans did not have the means to secure them.…

(John, 2014) Conservatives are ideologically defined by their strict adherence to traditional values and practices as well as their support for little to no governmental regulation and their emphasis on individual citizens taking personal responsibility. Liberals are alternatively defined by their belief that the government should be active in the regulation of the people in order to protect the citizens from the possibility of unequal and discriminatory actions. (Rosalee & Zoe, p134) Liberals are also recognized by their beliefs in the overall equality of citizens, protection of liberties and progressive thinking that is based on the idea that there is overall an essential goodness to the mass populous. While there are vast differences between these opposing sides, it is possible to see how a person may agree with a conservative view of government while simultaneously believing in the humanist attributes of the liberal…

If I were to describe my political ideology, I would consider myself mostly liberal with some independent views. I believe in equality for everyone, regardless of gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, nationality, etc. I think Americans need to be a little more accepting, and open to reaching out and helping those in need. This country needs to continue moving forward and growing, and I do not see that happening with a conservative in charge.…

    Affirmative Action - 10

Affirmative action has been used throughout history to decide whether or not "minority" status American citizens should have a voice. Affirmative action refers to an action or policy favoring those who tend to suffer from discrimination in relation to employment, education etc. This topic has been very controversial in both the past and present. It has been commonly used in the college acceptance process in order to include different cultures and ethnicity's into schools. This process should be used, to a degree, to help minorities make better future for themselves. Affirmative action should be used because it gives people or students a better chance to reach their full potential in career, a higher chance of moving out of poverty, it helps liberate them from oppression and gives them a chance to win the race commonly won by the majority.…

    Being Liberal

In a nation with such polar political stances and opinions, I typically view myself as a liberal-leaning member of society. As a liberal, I value the rights of the individual, and the freedoms that we are born with. I take into consideration that opportunity and equality for all is an important idea that should be stressed in our society and should be carried out by our government. I also feel that it is the role of the government to eliminate social problems and protect the natural rights of each individual. I stand on the ground of eliminating the death penalty, enforcing pro-choice decisions, and accepting that Global Warming/ Climate Change is a direct result of poor human decisions and consumptions, along with many other liberal ideas.…

    Sexism In America

I believe that I fall under liberal on the political spectrum. I have very liberal beliefs and I have very progressive ideas and think the government should be more involved in people's lives. For example I believe that the government should be doing a much better job at protecting the earth and implement more laws to save the earth from global warming. Another very important issue that I believe the government is not doing enough to prevent is racism and sexism in America. Both these issues are prevalent in America and I believe that the government needs to do more to address these issues. Since Donald trump has become president I believe sexism, racism, and global warming issues have taken a backseat, to other less important issues. Conservatives…

It can be described as equality versus liberty. In egalitarianism, the goal is to have the people equal in the living experience. This means that every person is entitled to the same programs based on needs. The central theme is to equalize the income, opportunity, and responsibilities to the society. The thought is that we are all in this process together; therefore, we should all be treated the same. Egalitarianism is based solely on the person rather than family wealth. This has the best outcomes for society. In libertarianism, the goal is based in having the freedom to operate has desired. This means that every person is entitled to act as he sees fit. Each person must act in a way that is beneficial to the society. It is left up to the individual as opposed to a government which can limit opportunities to prosper in society. They do not support the laws, statues, or restrictions that undermine freedom of operations. Essentially, the disagreement is based on individual needs which is egalitarianism or based on individual ability which is…

    Libertarianism

Libertarians strongly oppose any government interfering in their personal, family and business decisions. In simpler terms, they are advocates of a smaller government, lower taxes, and more freedom. However, libertarians are neither liberal nor conservative, this distinction is based upon the fact that libertarians advocate a very high degree of both personal liberty and economic liberty. Although the libertarian party is neither conservative nor liberal, it tends to borrow from both sides to come up with a logical entirety, and is known as the “Party of Principle.” Although the party is most successful being in charge of government at the local level, the party is active in all fifty states, and has had presidential candidates in the past. Libertarian candidates running for office at the federal, state and local levels throughout the United States are offering voters libertarian solutions that make you freer while making the federal government less costly, bossy and intrusive.…
