The Torment Of St. Anthony: The Walter Fitch III Room
Within the Timken Museum of Art there is a painting, a painting that represents the dilemma within the life of a saint. Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo calls this painting The Torment of Saint Anthony. Savoldo’s painting is framed along a wall of light and dark red arrows with artificial and natural light from above. Within this airy space deemed The Walter Fitch III Room this painting is surrounded by various art pieces from around the world; most of which are religious art pieces. Though each of these paintings are very unique and have much to offer the focus of this essay will be on that of the painting known as The Torment of Saint Anthony. Starting his painting in 1508 Savoldo set out to create an interpretation of St. Anthony’s torment in his own unique way. This 27 3/8x47 in. painting describes St. Anthony fleeing from the torment of demonic creatures and evil spirits as he attempts to reach a land …show more content…
Savoldo’s painting represents Anthony’s constant struggle in great artistic detail and is a painting that brings those struggles to life. In the bottom left portion of this painting St. Anthony’s hands are clasped in prayer as he moves to a pastoral land where light shines in. He seems to have escaped yet the emotions on his face depict a fear or uncertainty that he will be unable to escape the torments completely. In the middle upper part of the painting a cave dwelling ape creature points a spear towards St. Anthony. This could represent the inescapable reality that St. Anthony will never truly be free of these demons and creatures. In the background of the left portion of the painting Savoldo uses atmospheric perspective to create depth to the painting. In the distance, behind St. Anthony, there is a monastery. This monastery is said to be a reminder that St. Anthony is the father

    The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston contains some of the greatest treasures of the Italian Renaissance, and not least among these is Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple, painted in 1467 by Bartolomeo d. Giovanni Corradini, better known as Fra Carnevale. This Urbinian painter and architect produced some of the greatest architectural paintings of the early Renaissance, and his techniques expressed an interest in the progression of the Italian Renaissance style of classical idealism. The Presentation, measuring 57 5/8 x 38 in., depicts the apocryphal story of the Virgin Mary’s Presentation in the Temple of Jerusalem by her parents at the age of three. Executed in oil and tempera on panel, the work frames a young Virgin in purple by the grand, classical architecture of the Temple. The entire work confers an atmosphere of contrast: the softness of Mary’s companions with the sharply defined, half-nude beggars, the religious with the classical reliefs, the tiny Virgin with the enormous architecture, and the brightly lit interior with the cloudy sky.     Perhaps the most noticeable part of this painting is Saint Luke’s piercing gaze. I believe this to be the focal point of the painting. His large gray eyes seem to looking to the right, not right at the viewer, his stare is slightly eerie. He is an older man; the signs of age can be seen on his forehead and the graying in his facial hair. Saint Luke’s beard is long, like you would expect of the time. It is very wavy and seems to curl in places. His head seems to be large which during the time this piece was painted was a common style toward the end of that century was. Saint Luke is wearing a vibrant blue robe like the types you would see in religious artworks. The detail in the color of his robe stands out. For instance, darker shades were used in parts of the folds of the material. The lighter parts are the outside, it gives the illusion that there may be a light facing the painting and the light is reflecting off his robe.
