The theme is the brutality of war. When the college friends were discussing about the war they’re about to take part in, Kropp said “Two years of shells and bombs a man won’t peel it off as easy as a sock” (Remarque 87). This shows the brutality of the war because it describes the effect the war puts on people is not easy to forget and for many, it’s permanent. As the friends were taking turns discussing war, Albert explained his view saying “The war has ruined us for everything” (Remarque 87). This shows brutality of war as well because it shows how broad the effect war is on people’s life. The theme of this book makes it a good book because its outcomes relates to the wars going on around the world right now. And it has important message/lesson on life in the front in the Great War, instead of just viewing the honor/patriotic part of the war it mainly focused on a very important part; fear and pressure. Weather remembering/regretting what has happened, or planning/worrying about what might happen, the past and future steal away our attention from the present. We become mentally absent forgetting to experience what is happening right here and right now. I believe that this is related to the theme in this novel which is that people should live in the present. Life unfolds in the present. The present is where decisions are made and emotions are felt. People should give it the attention it deserves. The great philosopher Buddha once stated, “The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn the past, worry about the future, but live in the present moment wisely and earnestly.” (131…

He struggles with his emotions to try and find the right principles he needs. The text states that “The inner drama of the Cama is that his guest for the River of Life … for, this world of shadows” (Harrison, James. Rudyard Kipling pg.53.). Struggles arise within the character to find the right principles. This proves that the character did struggle internally. He struggled with his morals and the struggle between good and evil. His principles and values were being pulled in separate directions. The River of Life symbolizes the evidence of rightful thinking. While the world of shadows symbolizes the cruelty and darkness that lies…

In the first paragraph alone, many important aspects of the narrator's character are revealed. It is revealed to the reader that the narrator was in love and is grieving for the woman he loved. It is also in the first paragraph where the major conflict is revealed. The major conflict, in which the narrator is involved, is his own torment from the memory of his dead wife. This is evident when the narrator says, "When I saw our room again, our bed, our furniture, everything that remains of the life of a human being after death – I was seized by such a violent attack of fresh grief that I felt like opening the window and throwing myself onto the street." Initially, the author intends the reader to feel sorry for the narrator and his loss. The thing that motivates the narrator in the conflict is his resolution to finish grieving before it consumes him. This is evident when he says, "Happy is the man whose heart forgets everything that it has contained."…

One of the most distinct themes of the Lord of the Flies is savagery versus civilization. The group of boys, alone on this island, are forced to push themselves both mentally and physically to stay in order; or in some cases, go insane. To die. He pondered the prospect. To sleep – as simple as that. And with that sleep we end the heartaches and the thousand natural…

We are living in a life where no one can see the end of it. We are breathing without even knowing what will happen to us a minute later. Life is like a road. Sometimes it seems that it’s an endless journey that we have to go through. From time to time we crash with different circumstances in our lives which make us slow down. But, it just happens once in a while because life flows (runs) so fast that nothing can stop it; the only choice that we have is to follow it. Each one of us chooses how to live through this difficult, busy, and for some people senseless life. One of the main characters Jack, decided to live his life without giving to it any meaning. He didn’t strive to acquire something; he was just dreaming without doing anything to fulfill his daydreams. “New” Critics would say that looking at this story they see that Jack can go through the road, but he chose the freeway which symbolizes the life’s progress. Either in life or in freeway if you are not paying attention, or you strayed…
