The Taming Of The Shrew Women
John Fletcher’s original work in the Tamer tamed is a response to William Shakespeare’s original work of “The Taming of the Shrew,” Fletcher who responded to Shakespeare’s work which depicted women by making them powerless and victims to deception and manipulation caused by men. John fetcher wrote a response to Shakespeare work switching the roles of power, Fletcher decided to give woman a voice in his play. Fletcher who made women manipulate the system to break boundaries which had been set in The Taming of the Shrew. This paper will examine how women manipulated the system during the seventeenth century. Women used different strategies to beat the system which was set by men. It was said that the oldest daughter was to be wedded before the youngest. Bianca was the youngest daughter who was wanted by all the guys in Padua, but she could not wed because Kate was the considered the shrew who always talked back and made men scared of her which is why no one but Petruchio wanted to marry her. The role of marriage was very important in “The Taming of The Shrew” which is what this story was mainly all about trying to get married to a wealthy father daughter. What was different about this story was it was not like your tradition love story that Shakespeare wrote. This play went beyond the regular love plot, it actually went beyond the wedding when a regular story ends. It showed life after marriage and show what the couple actually went through. It show how hard marriage was in a society where women wanted power but their husband didn’t allow it. The gender debate of women trying to gain power by tricks and talking back because they thought they could made a point in history, but women didn’t have a voice in literature during the renaissances period. This play does a great job of showing how gender and wealth in a society, Petruchio who does a great job of showing how love really didn’t have a role in Shakespeare work. Petruchio who went behind Kate back to seek approval from her father to wed her. This idea in fact shows that men ruled this era making it hard for women to have a say so in their own
