Katherine And Juliet And The Taming Of The Shrew
Bravery, Independence, and helpfulness are great examples of character traits. In every book, movie, TV show, and play, characters may be faced with overcoming their own traits to complete a certain goal. A few characters share the same traits and many characters are completely opposite. Written in 1590 and 1595 by William Shakespeare, The Taming of the Shrew and Romeo and Juliet both exhibit a wide variety of characters with individual personalities. Katherine and Juliet, the two leading ladies, present a shopping cart full of similarities and differences. One can see that, while only Katherine is independent, both Katherine and Juliet are passionate and dramatic.
Deepening the understanding of the characters, only proves Katherine is independent and Juliet is reliant. The women of this time period were expected to rely on their fathers or husbands. They were expected to only speak when spoken to. Katherine, however, did not fit the definition of a perfect woman. Kate and Juliet are both dramatic, verbally and situationally. Kate beat up her sister, Bianca, simply because she was jealous of her father’s affection towards her. Bianca begged for mercy, “I prithee, sister Kate, untie my hands” (2.1 21). To which Katherine strikes her and replies, “If that be jest, then all the rest was so” (2.1 22). Furthermore, Kate is dramatic because she threw a temper tantrum because she wanted attention from her father. Likewise, Juliet is dramatic because she would rather die, than marry Paris. Juliet threatens she would, “O, bid me leap, rather than marry Paris” (4.1 81). Juliet is a young girl who dramatically exclaims she would rather jump off a building than marry someone she doesn’t
