The Stolen Party By Liliana Hecker Analysis
“Respect other people’s feelings and beliefs. Even if it doesn’t mean anything to you, it could mean everything to them”-unknown. Prejudicial stereotypes have and will be seen in our society, for example, in the U.S society, due to all the terrorist attacks around the world, people automatically make prejudicial assumptions that all Muslims are “terrorists”. These stereotypes can legitimately hurt one’s feelings of their racial background and ethnicity. These events seen everyday itches the mind of the individual about actions seen, yet unspoken in everyday surroundings. This poses the question: what are you, as an individual, in this discrimination-filled society doing to force an end to this commonly seen social conflict? Many people do not …show more content…
Throughout the short story, the protagonist, Rosaura, is invited to Senora Ines’ daughter, Luciana’s party. There Rosaura helps allocate resources from the party such as food, drinks, and required items. Towards the end of the short story, there is sharp turn when the concept of Rosaura being a servant other than a guest is casted to the reader, which causes incertitude between the two ethnic communities. To illustrate, in the short story it states “ ‘So where do you know her from?’ said the girl, getting impatient. Rosaura remembered her mother’s words perfectly. She took a deep breath. ‘I’m the daughter of the employee,’ she said. Her mother had said very clearly: ‘If someone asks, you say you’re the daughter of the employee that’s all...And proud of it’ ” (2). This piece of evidence portrays an intense conversation between a friend of Luciana’s with Rosaura, which illustrates the fact that since Rosaura is the daughter of the employee, that creates an invisible barrier between the two characters which can lead to an argument between the two ethnic communities which is also seen in our everyday surroundings such as the simple fact that there is constant turbulence between the Hispanic and American communities. Thus, this piece of evidence connects back to the claim that racial discrimination is the major source of mayhem between different cliques by conveying the issues between social

From the start we can see that class difference and lack of acceptance creates chaos. First, we see the scene where the politician’s wife was arguing with her husband about the two carjackers and she says, “if a white person sees two black guys walking towards you and you walk the other direction, she’s a racist!” She was upset at the fact that she got robbed because she didn’t say anything to her husband or else she would've been considered as a racist. Another scene that shows lack of acceptance creating chaos is the scene when the hispanic locksmith was fixing the door knob and the politician’s wife was arguing with her husband and she was telling him “ i want the locks changed in the morning and it’ll be nice if this time they didn’t send a gandbanger.” If you noticed, the lack of acceptance is what makes her act so poorly towards people. She was quick to assume that the hispanic locksmith was a gangbanger because of his background. Throughout the film, she makes assumptions that hurt others but she doesn’t realize it. The politician’s wife has a maid named Maria and in all the scenes we see Maria getting treated like garbage and like she isn’t a human being with feelings. She couldn’t accept others others because she wasn’t happy with herself. Before she fell…

With the case of Dr. Daire, Young (2017 p.71) highlights the importance of addressing prejudices and how individuals, even if they do not wish to, may have prejudiced beliefs about culturally diverse individuals. Growing up in a small rural community I was not entirely aware of, or exposed to, cultural prejudices and racism because the population in which I was a part of was predominantly Caucasian. Since moving to a much larger and diverse city I am aware of just how ignorant and close-minded people can be about those who are culturally different. The case scenario that Young (2017) provides forced me to think more about this topic and why it is important in a helping relationship to address prejudice thoughts and beliefs. I feel it is important…

Prejudice in its negative uses can cause multiple types of harm to an individual. It can affect how other’s see them, how they act towards others, and what they are given the chance to do. Prejudice is complicated in the fact that it is difficult for people “to dismiss their existing categorical beliefs” about certain races, sexes, intelligence level, etc. (Cherry 1). Once a group or individual is placed in its stereotype, people cannot seem to believe anything else. Feelings of prejudice are constant; they will likely not…

Conflict is an inevitable part of life whether it is in relationships, socially, or between nations. Most conflicts arise from differing points of view on actions or goals and how they are handled can lead to a ceasefire or the breakup of one’s relationships. Conflict resolution skills are needed when navigating the stormy waters of conflict. How one perceives the goals and intentions of others can lead to misconceptions. When an individual or group perceives another’s intentions are harmful conflict will arise. It is human nature to believe that one’s group is different or better than another group. Forming an “in-group bias” will lead one to look for evidence to support one’s negative opinions of others. Stereotyping is often behind negative opinions and misconceptions that lead to conflicts.…

In order to prepare for this assignment, I was required to do some research about implicit attitudes, stereotypes, and prejudice. I also had to open my mind and be prepared to learn some things about my own personal hidden biases. Before I took the Implicit Attitude Test, I learned the definitions of stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. Stereotypes are defined individuals’ beliefs that members of a group share particular attributes and negative stereotypes can provide the basis for prejudice and discrimination. Prejudice is a having a negative attitude towards member of a group. Discrimination is simply aggression towards people because they are members of a specific group. Armed with this information, I began my journey into finding out my own personal hidden biases.…

In my view, Rosaura is extreme naive. She does not understand a real friend’s definition and she is used by her rich friend. Luciana invites her to the party just want to cheat out of her, but Rosaura is proud to be one of the guests who join the luxurious birthday party. From reading the story, I understand different concept often cause disagreement and embarrass situations. As a result, it is important to know our value before we decide to do something. Never think that having many beautiful name brands is equal to a rich people because the disparity is still big. I think “The Stolen Party” is interesting because it is about a relationship between rich and poor, and the gap between rich and poor is always a problem from the pass to present. Therefore, I believe “The Stolen Party” is a topical…

If we lived in a perfect world, everyone would be equal, everyone would have the same prestige and we would all live in peace. Unfortunately, we do not live in such a world. In Liliana Heker's story, "The Stolen Party", we are reminded of the thin line that separates the lower class, the less fortunate, from the upper class, the "better people". In an instant, we see all the discrimination and inhumane treatment some people feel they have the right to inflict on those whom they consider "not one of them." The story is about Rosaura, the nine-year-old daughter of a woman who does housecleaning for a wealthy family. Rosaura often accompanies her mother to work and does her homework with Luciana, the daughter of the house. As a result, or so she thinks, Rosaura is Luciana's friend and has been invited to her birthday party. The first evidence we see which supports the claim that this story is about class structure, comes when Rosaura's mother, Herminia, says to her, "I don't like you going, it's a rich people's party." This lets the reader know that Herminia is aware of the ways of the world. When she tells her starry-eyed daughter who is full of hope and innocence that, "The problem with you, young lady, is that you like to fart higher than your ass," she's trying to convince Rosaura that she is shooting too far above her social station. She tries to explain to her daughter that the people will look at her as "the maid's daughter" and not as another person, but Rosaura is only nine and "one of the best in her class",and she feels that Luciana is her friend and that she has been invited to Luciana's party any other guest, as an equal. At this point in the story, Rosaura is unaware of discrimination in our society. This is confirmed when Rosaura says, "Rich people go to heaven too." The main idea conveyed here, is that adults recognize social boundaries which children do not see.…

As a woman of color and member of the LGBT+ community, I have experienced prejudice in various, intimate forms. As patriotic as I am, I cannot help but feel sorrow at the injustices in our society. I possess hope for the future that conditions will better for all peoples in our country. My conviction is that the first step to acquiring social justice is erasing ignorance. Importance lies in recognizing the signs of institutionalized injustice. In relation to the well known idiom "ignorance is bliss," the bliss of the ignorant rests upon the unjust treatment of those suffering oppression. On the other hand, the oppressed may also be ignorant of their oppression as a deliberate means to keep them oppressed when they could be…

Discrimination is still among our world today, and stays a constant issue. Many people would argue this accusation, and try to believe that the world today is better than it was years ago, but the fact is that it is still the same. Discrimination is not just among races or ethnic groups, it is among different genders, religions, and marriage partners. Today people argue about discrimination all of the time. Why is it still among us? What can be done? Why don’t we just let it be? But, in fact, none of these questions are ever solved and might never be answered because of the contrasting beliefs of society. Society has put discrimination into stereotyping and many other different forms, but the point is that discrimination is here to stay and…
