In 2001, Bonczar (2003) notes that Blacks accounted for nearly seventeen percent of individuals previously or currently incarcerated, which was six times more than White males. Besides having a higher chance of serving a prison term, African American are also likely to be sentenced to longer sentences than White Americans for the same crime. The face in the criminal justice carnival mirror is also … very frequently black face. Although blacks do not make up the majority of the inmates in our jails and prisons, they make up a proportion that far outstrips their proportion in the population.2 Here, too, the image we see is distorted by the processes of the criminal justice system itself. Edwin Sutherland and Donald Cressey write in their widely used textbook Criminology that Numerous studies have shown that African-Americans are more likely to be arrested, indicted, convicted, and committed to an institution than are whites who commit the same offenses, and many other studies have shown that blacks have a poorer chance than whites to receive probation, a suspended sentence, parole, commutation of a death sentence, or pardon.3 Curiously enough, statistics on differential treatment of races are available in greater abundance than are statistics on differential treatment of economic classes. For instance, although the FBI tabulates arrest rates by race (as well as by sex, age, and geographical area), it omits class or income. Similarly, both the President’s Crime Commission Report and Sutherland and Cressey’s Criminology…

Blacks are more likely to go to prison at a higher rate than Hispanics and three times the rate as their white counterparts. It also says there is the same amount of people who commit violent crimes and drug offenses that are incarcerated at the same amount. This suggest to me that the American society is likely to convict a black male at a higher rate than anyone else.…

Racial Disparity is defined as ¬¬¬existing in the criminal justice system when the proportion of a racial/ethnic group within the control of the system is greater than the proportion of such groups in the general population. Basically racial disparity is the inequity of arrests and sentencing for certain groups of people which seem to be a huge problem. In order for the racial disparity policy to be successful we must first identify the components that have led to the current level of incarceration. In an article it is said that disproportionate crime rates, disparities in criminal justice processing, overlap of race and class effects, and impact of race neutral policies are all components that contribute to this racial disparity and its increase.…

An estimated twelve percent of African American men ages twenty to thirty-four were either in jail or prison in 2002. Researchers with the Bureau of Justice Statistics estimate that twenty-eight percent of African American males will be jailed or imprisoned at some point in their life (Coker, D. 2003). A lot of these men that are incarcerated were stopped walking, riding a bike, or driving just because they are African American. The statistics make it seem like African Americans commit more crimes than any over race and that’s not true. If the police stopped the other races half as many times as they stop African Americans, the incarceration rate would be more…
