The Relationship Between Parents In Romeo And Juliet
In the article “Sometimes Parents Just Don’t Understand,” the author describes the relationship between teenagers and their parents as… . The anonymous author states that parents are seen as “old-fashioned and protective” and not “empathizing” (P. 2, 6). As a result, teenagers and parents are having a hard time listening to each other because they have different mindsets because teenagers have a “semi-matured mind,” which makes them “act on impulse” and do rash things (P. 6). Parents, on the other hand, have a mature mind, but have trouble being empathetic and understanding their children. When Capulet does not understand Juliet in William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, problems arise because of the lack of communication between them.

To teenagers, parents seem “unsympathetic and old-fashioned,” which is true sometimes. (P.6). In Romeo and Juliet, Capulet agreed to let Paris marry Juliet without asking for her consent. Capulet merely assumed that he knew what his daughter wanted. He wanted to help Juliet come out of her grief of Tybalt’s death, so he thought marriage would make her more cheerful. But when she refused to marry Paris, he rages that he will “drag [her] on a hurdle thither” and to “never after look[him] in the face” (Act 3 Scene 5 Lines 160,168). He did not stop to understand or think about why she refused but instead loses his temper and threatens to disown her. Capulet thought he knew his child and he presumed that she would “be ruled in all respects by[him]” (Act 3 Scene 4 Lines 14-15). He accepted Juliet’s marriage offer for her because he thought she would do anything to obey her father’s wishes, which turned out to be false. He thought he was doing what was helping Juliet, but he did not empathize with her when she did not agree with him.
