The Pros And Cons Of Self Driving Vehicles
Self driving cars used to just be an idea, in fact an idea that is becoming a reality. These new cars are high tech and safer for the everyday life. There are already self driving cars on the road. In fact, the first thought of a car that could drive itself was in 1939, New York Worlds Fair, where visitors were presented a vision of automated highways. No progress was made until Google started testing cars in California in 2009. Google was being helped by some Stanford University (Gibbs, Samuel). On December of 2014 Google announced the first running self driving car (Google Self Driving Car Project). Shima believed that one day self driving cars were going to come, but today's technology is not quite ready for that day to come. Ford explained the self driving car as,"Thrilling the passengers"(Weber, Harrison). Self Driving Cars are able to make smart decisions on their own (Rayej, Shima). A self driving car contains a radar, a GPS, a navigation system inside the car, video, and multiple other sensors. The car contains a descriptive map of all earth's features(Guizzo, Erico). "The most frequently used sensor for a map building are laser range finders and cameras," Shima Rayej stated. Using the laser range finder the car is able to build a three dimensional map. A laser range finder emits a laser beam that measures from obstacles around to how long it takes to reach or pass that object.
