Many popular name brand car companies expect driverless cars to be on the market by 2020, and for all cars to be driverless by 2025. The idea of a car that can drive, navigate, and park itself was an idea only to be heard of in the movies, but now it is in it’s final stages of testing. The self driving car is currently in production of prototypes to be demonstrated to the public by popular name brand companies like: Tesla, Mercedes Benz, BMW, and more. With the introduction of a driverless car, the lives of many drivers will become much easier and create a positive effect.. Accidents that occur during parking results usually in minor car damages combined with major fines. According to Debbie Moore, a writer and blogger who focuses on parking related issues states that approximately one in every five car accidents occur in a parking lot. Moore also states that over 200 people were killed in parking related accidents in 2012 (Moore 1). Parking is not easy for many people due to parking lots that contain small compact spaces or little lighting that does not make it any easier for drivers to park safely. Parking is a big hassle that comes along with driving. Consumers are also less likely to pay for parking meters or for someone to valet their car when parking is hard to find. With the introduction of the self driving car that can also park itself, consumers will not have to worry about parking or finding their car. The self driving car is capable of dropping off its passengers, safely locating a parking spot with its software and sensors, park itself, and then drive itself back to the owner when needed. (CBS News 1) The car is able to complete all of the tasks listed through the computer and software programmed into the vehicle, and is expected to be controlled by an app on a phone or smartwatch. Dudley Brier, a technology writer for the Seattle Times, was able to cover the story on the success of the self driving car and watch application. Recently, BMW tested one of its prototype vehicles with the self parking smartwatch app. A volunteer was able to tell a parked prototype car to navigate to their location and pick them up through the use of a smartwatch app (Brier 1).
