The Pros And Cons Of Gmos
GMOS
“If an individual who has a known allergy to peanuts unsuspectingly consumed a genetically modified organism that contained the allergenic protein from the peanut, conceivably the individual would experience an allergic reaction” ("Ohio State University”). It is startling to know that in today’s society someone who is allergic to something like peanuts cannot eat many foods that have been grown around peanuts or that have been processed in the same place where peanuts have been. This means that farmers have to take extra caution of what they plant around peanuts. Also, all these products that have been grown or processed around peanuts have to be labeled for the consumer to know that they were processed or grown around peanuts. Genetically

We already know that most GMOs are bad for us, and there are plenty of websites out there with information on why GMOs are bad for us and why we shouldn’t eat them. There are also ways to avoid eating GMOs such as “Buy Organic! Foods certified by the USDA as ‘organic’ cannot intentionally contain GMOs” ("GMO Education and Labeling"). Organic foods are one way to avoid eating GMOs but there are still other ways too. Like looking for Non-GMO Project Seals “Products that carry the Non-GMO Project Seal are independently verified to be in compliance with North America’s only third party standard for GMO avoidance” (“Tips for Avoiding GMOs”). When the consumer is aware and educated on the subject of GMOs they can avoid eating and using GM products.

Because some GMOs can trigger allergic reactions such as my example of how an allergenic protein from the peanut can trigger peanut allergic reactions. It is only right that genetically modified organisms should be required to be labeled. Also because genetically modified organisms are an expensive technology that some farmers cannot afford, GMOs should not be required for farmers to grow if they do not want to. In the future I predict that GMOs are going to be the only thing we will be eating but yet unlike today how they are bad for us they will be good for us and will not cause any problems to our

Some of the reasons include subjecting their consumers to crops that have not been fully tested. The Institute for Responsible Technology has published a study on the effects of GMO fed rats. “1.8 Farmers report pigs and cows became sterile from GM corn 1. More than 20 farmers in North America report that pigs fed GM corn varieties had low conception rates, false pregnancies or gave birth to bags of water. 2. Both male and female pigs became sterile. 3. Some farmers also report sterility among cows.”(Web) Although human trials have yet to exist, the possibility of sterility is a scary consequence for a food. Another reported health problem was internal organ damage, “4.1 GM proteins may be misfolded or have added molecules 1. Proteins expressed in a GM plant may be processed differently than in the donor organism. 2. Those changes, which could include misfolding or molecular attachments, can be harmful in many unpredicted ways. 3. Current studies do not adequately test for these changes”(Web). In chemistry, there are hundreds of thousands of compounds such as proteins and amino acids, and every single compound has a very specific blueprint of molecules laid out to plug into the human body in specific ways. When this exact blueprint is not followed, it can lead to failure of proper digestion and absorption of these nutrients. A GMO can have a replica blueprint but if the nutrient is off by a single bond, it can mimic its original molecules structure but have the inability to properly plug into the digestive systems. Although there are immeasurable possibilities for mutation in these organic-based compounds, there are also a large amount of advantages to GMOs. Both sides to the GMO story are told by Jon Entine on Forbes.com, “Although there have been more than 2,000 studies documenting that biotechnology does not pose an unusual threat to human health and genetically modified foods are as safe or…

The “Genetically Modified Food: Good, Bad, Ugly” by Arthur L. Caplan talks about how customers do not have any information of what the food that is being consume is made from and this may consequences for the consumers in the long run because of not knowing what chemicals are being used in the production of each part of the food. As you read this article, the author emphasized on a key problem for businesses that they need to label their products that contain genetically modified organisms also called GMOs. Farmers’ income is also impacted when their animals die and the vegetables and fruits are being harm because of the chemicals it contains. The main problem with GMOs is that they are harmful to everyone who consumes them, but he stated…

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)/Genetically Engineered (GE) foods are the result of laboratory processes which artificially insert genes into the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of food crops or animals. There are many arguments both in favor of and against mandatory labeling of GMO/GE foods. Whether or not to require labeling of GMOs or GE foods also involves the debate over the risks and benefits of food crops produced using biotechnology. However, the overarching argument is consumers have a right to know what is in their food, especially concerning products that can cause allergic reactions. According to the Campaign for Healthier Eating in America, Genetically Modified (GM) foods are linked to toxic and allergic reactions, sick, sterile, and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals (http://www.responsibletechnology.org). Because there is no scientific evidence that GMO/GE foods do or do not cause health issues in humans (because there have been no long-term studies), consumers may or may not be being harmed by GMOs. However, the safety of GMOs has been questioned by other countries. In fact, they are banned by food manufacturers in Europe and other countries, but, present in the majority of meats, produce, diary and processed foods in the United States (US). Many consumers in the US have no knowledge that they are consuming GMOs. If they did, it is now known if, similar to Europe, many would prefer to not consume GMO/GE foods. However, without proper labeling, the big issue of concern is, they do not know how to avoid them if they wanted to.…

The FDA has noted that genetically modified foods are considered “functionally equivalent to the conventionally grown-crops” (Weise 2013). This statement implies that although the ingredients are not identical in genetic make-up to non-GMO foods, they have the same purpose and therefore do not need to read different on their labels regarding nutrition and ingredients. The same applies to USDA and EPA. Nationally labeling GMO foods is not required due to the National Food and Drug Administration’s stance on this topic. Some states are unsure of whether to pass the legislative bill regarding labeling, in fear that not enough states will pass the same bill.…

GMO crops face a lot of criticism, but the facts are that they are more environmentally friendly than traditional crops, they have higher and more stable yields than traditional crops, and are safe to consume. Some critics claim that GMO crops are unsafe and offer no significant advantages over traditional ones. This however, is not true. GMO crops are as safe as and more effective than traditional crops in every way.…

Many people look at GMOs with a sort of view as if to ask: Why should I eat new GMO crops, when I could eat a crop that has been around for millennia? What they don’t understand, is that there is really no such thing as a crop that scientists just altered. People have been modifying plants since the creation of agriculture twelve thousand years ago. While it may have been done differently back then, the current method of genetically modifying plants is just a more deliberate way of doing what humankind has always done. The only difference now is that people have a scientific understanding of what they are doing and have improved agricultural techniques; advancements in agriculture have moved from the farm to the lab. The reason that I think so many people are opposed to GMOs, is because they don’t understand what they are, and because they think that scientists are doing something radical in making GMOs; they fear the unknown.”(Chrisopher…

Since Genetically Modified Organisms have been introduced to food industry, there has been a substantial increase in food allergies in children and adults. Studies have shown how proteins produced by engineered plants (also known as GMOs) are different than the way they should be. According to Thierry Vrain in “Former Pro-GMO Scientist Speaks Out On The Real Dangers of Genetically Engineered Food”, “Inserting a gene in a genome using this technology can and does result in damaged proteins. The scientific literature is full of studies showing the engineered corn and soya contain toxic or allergenic proteins” (Vrain Par. 9). The human body works based on the proteins that come from the food you eat, and are crucially needed to help the body function. The proteins that you take in, work in different ways, some are used to build cardiac muscle or helps oxygen to every part of the body. Once the body begins taking these toxic proteins in, it will begin to break down the immune system your body has developed and will eventually leave you with no immune system leaving your body vulnerable to illness and diseases. Besides the health issues with proteins being genetically modified and causing health problems with the immune system, the amount of food allergies have increased as well. In an article by Organic Consumers Association, “GE Foods Can Cause Allergic Reactions”, “There is concern that GM foods pose an allergy risk. Currently the list of GM food products intersect with the eight most common food allergens: eggs, milk, fish, peanuts, shellfish, soy, tree nuts, and wheat” (“GE Foods Can Cause Allergic Reactions” Par. 5). Children are now missing vital nutrients and having to turn to taking supplements for the proteins they are not receiving. It is not just children who are having to seek extra supplements for their dietary needs…

They argue that the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) has discovered through animal testing that GMOs to lead dangerous health risks from accelerated aging and immune system problems passing by organ damaging and infertility. According to the physicists of the AAEM, there is a direct relation between GMOs and these health problems (Smith 48). In fact, in 2009, the AAEM urged all doctors to prescribe all their patients non-GMOs diets as, according to them, many of the cases where doctors could not identify the cause of the problem were caused by GMOs (Smith 48). Could one of these problem be allergies? Because another research discovered that GMOs could accidently transfer allergens from one type of food to another, like it was done with the Brazil nuts that contaminated GMOs soybean (“Should You Worry...” 5). Whatever the case is, the AAEM also discovered that the resistant genes of soybean could be transferred to bacterias inside our intestines, meaning that the dangerous proteins in GMOs can potentially be reproduced in our organism even once we have stopped eating GMOs (Smith, 48). Aside of the dangers of GMOs, they are still not the most effective way to produce food. According to Colin Tudge, a British scientist and writer, it has been proved that the best way to farm is the traditional way in which…

I was born and raised in a small rural town in western Kansas. I have learned hardworking values growing up on a farm. My family relies on farming and ranching as a way of life. So, when I hear people talking about how GMO’s are bad for people’s health and our environment, it makes me feel concerned about the information people are receiving. GMO’s don’t affect the health of people or the environment at all. Instead they help to improve crop yields by modifying the seeds according to where a person lives by being drought resistant or bug resistant for example. This helps farmers and ranchers such as my family to make more profit from a higher yield. This results in more food produced which can help in a world with an ever-growing population.…

A 2003 poll showed that 92 percent of Americans favor labeling genetically Engineered (GE) food. Why would this food need labeled? Because it was created by transporting a gene from one organism to another, therefore making it a new organism. This action is done in animals and plants alike. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are organisms whose genomes have been altered to favor certain characteristics (Diaz). For many years there has been breeding done in plants so as to have the desired characteristics, such as juicier tomatoes. The United States government does not see GMOs differently from breeding. GMOs, though, are formed by scientific procedures like cloning and Recombinant DNA technology. A primary reason…

The two articles I have chosen are both peer-reviewed and have two different opinions about GMO’s. The first article, titled “GMO’s and Global Justice” by Kristian Toft, is against the use of GMO’s, explaining how they are bad for us as human beings and for our environment. Her biggest concern is that we do not know the extent of what these genetically modified foods are doing to our bodies because of the lack of long-term affect testing. When trans-fats were first introduced, corporations battled to get them onto our grocery shelves. It is only decades later that this once novel food has been proven to be extremely unhealthful. This could be a glance into the future of GMO’s. It is similarly a concern that GMO’s in food are causing an increase in allergic reactions. The process of genetically modifying a plant or animal adds new proteins that weren’t indigenous to the original plant or animal, causing an allergic reaction increase when ingested in the human body. Also, some GMO foods have had antibiotic features added to them so they are resistant to certain diseases and viruses. When humans eat them, these antibiotics features persist in our bodies and make actual antibiotic medications less effective. Toft goes on to say that GMO’s are banned in more than 60 countries around the world including, the European Union,…

Because there are no visible differences between a genetically modified plant and the base plant the GMO was based off, we cannot tell which one is organic, and which one is not. The only way anybody can tell if it is organic or not is by examining it in a laboratory. This is extremely dangerous because now everything we eat could have traces of the harmful genetically modified life in our diet. Every day, people used to eat things that were actually meant to eat. Now many put things into their bodies that are made to sell and make money. GMOs were not created to solve the world hunger situations, they were made to be easily created and to sell easily without putting a nasty taste in consumer’s mouth. They were not made to create a better diet for humanity or to help the environment. Genetically modified organisms were created to make more money. GMO activists may complain that the more food that is made in the laboratory, the more food for the poor and hungry. But if this the case, why not ask them how many people are going hungry a day? About 795 million according to the World Food Programme. Why haven’t GMOs help this number decrease? Because they were made to make money, not to save…

Def/Explanation: Firstly, GMO is an acronym for Genetically Modified Organisms. What this concept is can be briefly explained by the following analogy. Suppose I take Iman* and Ibrahim* to take part in a science experiment. I take some of Iman’s genes, duplicate it and put it in Ibrahim’s body. Then I present Ibrahim in front of you all and tell you that this new Ibrahim is far stronger, efficient and beneficial to all of you and the society. You guys don’t know anything that has happened with Ibrahim internally and are just brainwashed that he is better for us. Similarly, GMOs are created but instead of humans they’re experimented on crops and animals. Therefore, because it is inhumane, defies the laws of nature and have consequences that are unknown to us, I strongly believe that GMOs should be completely banned from our society, once and for all!…
