3. Devout Christians were disturbed by the decline in morality of the 1970s (hippies, sexual revolution, etc); New Right promoted school prayer & tough punishment for crimes; Attacked Abortion, the ERA, & homosexuality…
1. Ideologies are important tools in framing the source of social problems based on their area of focus. Neoliberalism and neoconservatism are examples of two dominant ideologies that exist in today’s society. Neoliberalism ideologies promote individualism and free enterprise ideas and a limited role for government whereas neoconservatism focuses on more traditional social, moral, and religious values. Both of these dominant ideologies have aspects that promote inequality and injustice, to name a few. Transformative ideologies also exist that challenge dominant ideologies such as those mentioned above. Analyzing each of…
So much change was in effect during the previous time period, that backlash would soon become inevitable. Conservatives were on a rise and they began to take control during this era. A traditional president, Reagan was elected, and his goals were clearly geared towards Republican America. Although Reagan may be viewed as a step in the wrong direction, he is quite frankly the opposite of that. He had detailed views on the Cold War, and did a great job of dealing with it. On a separate note, the post-Cold War led to challenges for US foreign and domestic policy. In regards to all these factors, American society continually faced dramatic change. This would be the case for all future events to occur, and America still continues to be the greatest…
Enlightenment was the prevailing thought of this era which called for reform, but most believed that the best way to affect change would be through the ruler. Government officials who had the ear of the ruler would instruct them to reform their Government to improve human society. Which resulted in what historians called enlightened absolutism. The new ways of thinking had several effects on both the Monarchical Absolutism and those under its rule. For example, sweeping reforms happened in Prussia, Russia and Austria changing the quality of life for the people for the better. However, even Enlighted Absolutism has its limits as we with the persecution of the Jewish people.…
Ever since his first election to public office in 1970, Reagan’s ability to draw listeners into his worldview has been prime research fodder for rhetoricians and political scientists. Every president, by virtue of his position, sets the news agenda, but few are able to affect the public’s vision much less re-cast the national ideology. Before Reagan, the last significant ideological realignment in American politics took place during the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Democratic president, elected in 1932, enacted a “New Deal” that upended longstanding political, economic and religiocultural presumptions. Between the 1870s and the 1920s, a dominant worldview biased toward business solutions, limited government and a Calvinist-inflected rectitude on social issues and morality had…
American politics were becoming more conservative as the Republicans took over the government. Conservative political writer, Richard Viguerie, divulges his reasons for thinking that the New Right and the Conservative rule are better for America. He believes that the Left is the group that has “tried to stop the clock and even bring back evils civilization has left behind.” He blames the Left for all of the problems that the United States have been having as of late and says that Americans now look down on the liberals. Ronald Reagan’s presidency is just another strength of this new conservative rule that he is advocating. President Reagan is a conservative Christian and won over the support of others like him. One of his main goals as…
Neo- conservatist’s view a zombie invasion as a war against evil itself, they view zombies as a larger threat than clashes of human civilization which arguably is accurate, when it comes down to morals and ethics that the undead lack. Neo- conservatist’s focus on military force and include an aggressive armed invasion of the…
In the book “Contradictions in Conservatism” Dr.Farmer explains the discrepancies and inconsistencies in conservatism in order to enlighten his audience about the contrariety in the ideology, Conservatism. Dr. Farmer brings forth to light the values and beliefs that they hold. He lists all of them and then he explains why they are wrong or contradicting. He does a great job in portraying their flawed logic. Along with all the ideologies he gives us basic information about Political Socialization and how our political attitudes towards other groups differ among everyone. It differs because different people in different locations contain different Socialization agents. Although, the majority of people In the United States tend to gain their attitudes…
We all come from different places and are born into different beliefs and do not always agree with one another in what is true and what is not. From television, to Internet and newspapers we get to read what surround us, what is happening in our every day life, but what are we reading and watching is it trustworthy? Can they tell us what is true or false? People disagree about many issues presented to them for example what is said in religion to what science proves and so on. This is where cultural relativism comes in, morally is correct to the beliefs and ethics of a particular culture within that same society. By this theory, no one can go against another society and say that their beliefs are right or wrong; it is up to one’s society where they choose what is correct or wrong. Philosopher James Rachels argues, cannot conclude a disagreement based on opinions on an issue and there could be possible a certainty of truth behind it. Considering this next argument provided by…
From the mid 1940s to the early 2000s, the conservative movement was at its apex in United States history. The Rise of Conservatism in America, 1945-2000: A Brief History with Documents by Ronald Story and Bruce Laurie contains documents all pertaining to the conservative movement. Out of the collection of the various documents in The Rise of Conservatism, five stand out to be the most important in detailing what the conservative moment was and what the basic beliefs and goals were. The documents are as follows: From The Conservative Mind by Russell Kirk, From the Conscience of a Conservative by Barry Goldwater, William F. Buckley Jr. publisher’s statement on his founding the National Review, Richard Nixon’s Labor Day Radio Address, and Ronald Reagan’s nomination acceptance speech.…
Cultural relativism is contradictory when it states that every culture should embrace a policy of tolerance towards other cultures. To begin with, cultural relativism states right and wrong differ from one cultural to another, it does not imply that other cultures have to tolerate that point of view. The fact of the matter is, one culture believes one idea and another may have another idea. These cultures are not going to change their point of view, or remotely agree with the other culture if their views are contradictory. Each culture has its own beliefs, there is no room for tolerance in true cultural relativism.…
Furthermore, the history of the Bush presidency shows that conservative elements are still dominant within the Republican Party. For example Bush’s strong foreign policy indicated that the republicans were still very conservative. After 9/11 Bush became more and more right wing which in his defence is what the public wanted. However the invasion of Iraq in 2003 highlighted that the Republican Party was still very much conservative. Furthermore the tax cuts that Bush made were very much traditionally conservative. For example the economic growth and tax relief reconciliation act of 2003…
I am focusing on individuals that live in the city of Mogadishu, which is the largest and the capital city of Somalia. Incident civilians remain vulnerable to sexual violence and forced evictions, by the Islamist armed group Al-Shabaab. Cultural relativism doesn’t impact the human rights issue that I have identified. For the reason that, the group Al-Shabaab. Doesn’t look at Somalia’s culture from their behaviors, actions or customs. Al-Shabaab only cares about themselves and not the incident Somalians they are fighting. And also they are against Somalia’s federal government.…
At first Mearsheimer describes the basic ideas. Neo-conservative theory, which supports Bush doctrine (these terms can be considered even as equal), may be described as Wilsonialism with teeth. It means that neo-conservatism has two main aspects: an idealist strand and a power strand. Neo-conservatives firmly believe in extremely powerful military of the United States. They think that the USA can use its military in order to reshape the world according to its national interests. They prefer to use the big-stick policy, rather than diplomacy, and consider this principle as absolutely justified. One of the specific features of the neo-conservative theory is unilateralism,…
