Cloning the Woolly Mammoth

The issue of whether we can or can't bring the giant Woolly Mammoth out of extinction is debatable. This is an important issue because there are many risks on cloning. A variety of different arguments state why we can or can not clone this extinct animal. This essay will consider why we can't clone the Woolly Mammoth along with reasons, these are that there are many risks of cloning, scientist have yet to find an intact Woolly Mammoth genome and will the cloned Woolly Mammoth be able to reproduce.

It is highly unlikely to bring the extinct Woolly Mammoth back to life because of the risks of cloning. Research by Learn Genetics, (2015) states that 970-999 failures of cloning in 1000 tries. So out of 1000 tries of …show more content…
Research by Learn Genetics, (2015) shows that with high failure rate of cloning, pregnancy itself may fail. Scientist may be able to clone the extinct Woolly Mammoth but then will the Mammoth be able to reproduce because as scientist remove cells from the elephant and replace cells, these cells may not work together to be able to reproduce a Woolly Mammoth (Joseph Castro, 2011). Therefore, the chances of bringing the Woolly Mammoth out of extinction is highly unlikely because the Woolly Mammoth may not be able to reproduce.

In conclusion, the extinct Woolly Mammoth has a highly unlikely chance of being brought back to life. This is because there is extremely high failure rates on cloning, the chances of a successful cloning process is varied between 0.1%-3% which is really low and this may decrease the elephant population. The cloning process can not start yet because scientist have yet to find a Woolly Mammoth Genome and the Cloned Woolly Mammoth may not be able to reproduce.
