Who I Admire Let me tell you about a man that raised not only me but my father. I still have memories of the first day that I met him on August 20, 2001 on a summer day. In which we had the longest conversion I ever had. Many people have their own idol and all want to be like them in certain ways by dressing up like them, having fame and money but I think different to all of them. I admire this person because he is thankful for everything that he has in life. He never complained about how his life turned out to be instead, he’s happy and grateful for what he has and what he accomplished; this man is my grandfather. I won’t ever forget those times I spent with my grandpa because he would tell me so many stories sad, happy and funny ones. I would describe my grandpa’s life as an adventurous one, full of many barriers but always finding ways to try and make things better for him. He didn’t have the opportunity to get an education past 6th grade but that didn’t prevent him from going out and exploring the different states of Mexico and taking the risk to come to the United States. Along the way he learned so much about the many things people did for survival because that was the main reason my grandpa left his family behind, for a better life.
My grandpa grew up in a small town in Mexico; he’s the third child out of four brothers. His family was very humble and they didn’t have much as he was growing up. There are no companies in this town so it’s not like people get up to go to work at a business like most of us do in the United States. The type of work is usually comes from farming the land and that’s exactly what my grandpa learned how to do best. When my grandpa was 10 years old he would wake up at 4 in the morning to travel about half an hour away from his home in an unfriendly environment to cut down wood. His other duties also included taking care of the cows and goats which was a very tough

For my grandma, her call to adventure wasn’t a normal one. She was faced with the huge problem of being born in the midst of a war. But as she began to grow older, my grandma began to realize the other major problems she would be facing. Having to find enough food to eat, worrying about whether or the enemy was going to strike, and even thinking about the radical fighters that would go after her first because she was a girl. “My journey began when I got old enough and realized all the hardships I would be facing”. Someone who helped my grandma through all of these hard times was her mother. My great-grandmother played the mentor position and helped prepare my grandma for all the hard times she would face. She would always tell my grandma to work hard and stand up for herself, and that life would one day get a lot better. These words prepared my grandma for the hard times she would face in the…

Fortunately for us, our family has strived in today’s society and would not be where we are without hardwork and dedication.…

To understand more about the struggles of an immigrant and how they conquered their American Dream, I decided to interview my grandfather. His story is very interesting and is a perfect example of the life of an immigrant. My grandfather is a 79 year old man who is from a province in Potenza, Italy. He has three siblings, five children, and fifteen grandchildren. My grandpa is an extremely religious Roman Catholic man who attends church every Sunday and always prays throughout the day. With very little formal education my grandfather was still able to be successful and provide for his family.…

He grew up extremely underprivileged, or so it would seem to this generation. He never owned anything that was given to him freely and I believe this fact alone shaped him into an unexplainably hard worker. He worked for everything he ever had and kept a positive attitude about it in that. To achieve the opportunities and dreams he desired he knew this, working from daylight to dawn and sacrificing things we could not imagine, was the only way he could do so. This characteristic alone is enough to leave me feeling speechless and guilty. However, this is not what amazes me about my grandfather. One day a few years ago on a scorching summer afternoon I was able to visit my “Papaw” just as he was finishing a carpentry project he had been working on for many months. Just as I sat down next to him on a bench he had crafted, my grandmother brought us out two glasses of lemonade. Admiring his work I sat silently, unable to imagine the hours he spent working on this project of his. Taking a sip of his lemonade my grandfather made a comment I will never forget. “I am living the American Dream, you know it A?” I had always had the notion that the American Dream was a white picket fence, two story home with 2.5 children and a groomed Labrador Retriever playing on the front lawn. My grandfather is not exceedingly…

As a young kid, he would take me to his worksite where I would pour cement, or put blocks on top of each other and spread the cement on the blocks. Later on when we moved to the United States I went dumpster diving with him for a few years. I would like to add, through all the pain, suffering, and trauma my grandpa went through the one thing his stories always thought was to never be afraid. He was the bravest man in Mexico. People always sharing stories with me about how brave he was. He always told me that I should be brave and follow my mom’s footsteps, because she is the spitting image of…

He was only 9, it’s hard for me to even understand the drive he had at that age. The love he had pushed him, he wouldn’t give up like so many had. When FDR became president he made programs for boys like my grandpa to work and build train tracks making money to send back to their parents. This was a life saver for my grandpa and he would constantly tell me how thankful he was, and that he wouldn’t of been here if it wasn’t for that. Things looked up after that blessing, he learned construction and became a very successful builder around the La Jolla area. His family grew up comfortably, his very dream, and he built a house for his mother to live in at the end of the…
