In “The Only Traffic Signal on the Reservation Doesn’t Flash Red Anymore” by Sherman Alexie the theme for the story would be, there is always hope even if there exists a cycle of failure as portrayed on the reservation in the passage. In the passage, Victor tells Adrian that he thought “Julius might be the one” but in the end, Julius got drunk and lost the game. For a long time, Julius symbolized hope on the reservation to make it all the way but it was alcohol that made him lose the game, so this itself reinforced that there was hope for a slight moment on the reservation for Julius to succeed to becoming a great baller off the reservation.
