Summary The Nightingale is set in France during World War II about the lives two completely different sisters, Isabelle and Vianne. Vianne is married to Antoine, who is fighting against the Nazi’s. Vianne wants nothing to do with the war, she just wants to be a mother to her daughter Sophia. Isabelle on the other hand wants to join the resistance and help fights the Nazi’s. Isabelle gets sent to many different boarding schools because she always runs away from them to go back to her father, who wants nothing to do with her. When the Nazi’s come to Vianne and Isabelle’s town, soldier’s billet Isabelle’s house causing her to go stay with Vianne. While in the resistance, Isabelle’s job is to help the soldiers down allied airmen that try to escape on German patrolled trains and then over the Pyrenees to Spain.She is also helping soldiers make it to the free zone. When Beck finds out about this, he turns on them and threatens to tell. Vianne and Isabelle know what needs to be done, they kill Beck. After Beck’s death, an SS officer billets. His name is Von Richter, he is completely different than Beck. While Von Richter stays with them, Vianne decides to do something even more dangerous. With the Nun’s help, she starts rescuing Jewish children and hiding them in the orphanage. When Von Richter finds out about Vianne’s mission, Vianne will do anything to keep Sophie, Ari and herself safe. While Vianne was on her crazy mission, Isabelle was still helping soldiers make it to the free zone. Isabelle is caught, arrested and beaten.
