'The Last Apprentice' By Joseph Delaney
In the book “The Last Apprentice: Night of the Soulstealer” by Joseph Delaney we meet an apprentice of a spook, Tom Ward. Tom has been living with his master for some time. This is the third book in the series and Tom has gained his trust from taking down a multitude of monsters in the first two books. The story starts off with Tom having a predicament, every winter, his master goes to a house in Anglezark and the spook does not want to have Alice, a witch friend of Tom’s, to be there with them. Later that evening, they get a knock on their door and a note from a shady figure dressed as a spook named Morgan; that later, Tom figures out is threatening the spook, the spook then wants to set off immediately for Anglezark. They start traveling …show more content…
I think that the story takes place around the early 19th century. The location is in England, but fantasy location that are in there. The mood of the setting is very dreary and sad; with usual rain. This is significant to the story because this is the type of weather where mystery and monsters love. The story would be a lot happier if it was set in somewhere like California, this would make the story a lot less scary when something like a witch is chasing Tom for his …show more content…
First of all, he is very brave because in the story two witches are chasing him and he fights against them. Next, Tom is loyal to who he thinks is right. This is shown when Morgan tries to force Tom into getting something for him, he has secretly been ready to give up his life if it meant that the county would be saved, and even though Morgan tried to make Tom betray the spook he was loyal to him… well… somewhat. The last big trait that I think that Tom has is he loves people. Tom, unlike many of the other characters in the story, does not have a cold heart. Tom is in love with the witch Alice and persuaded the spook, not to kill her; also, he tried to save his dad’s soul even though it could be getting him killed.

The two characters Tom and the spook are very prominent in the story are so close and so different from each other. The similarities between them is that Tom and the spook both are very loyal. The spook almost died to save some people, and Tom did the exact same thing when he was going to become a sacrifice and was ready to die for the country. The differences are that the spook does not like showing emotion while Tom is totally fine with expressing himself. Those are the two main characters in the series and can’t be so similar and can’t be so different at the same

While spending time with casy, Tom begins to see himself more like Casy. He noticed this realization towards the end of the book. For example, when Tom meets Casy once more, Casy tells Tom that he has been starting a strike and he is trying to bring justice to those who have been starving. When Casy dies and Tom has to go into hiding, Tom ends up thinking a lot about Casy and his thoughts. In this quote, “Lookie, Ma. I been all day an’ all night hidin’ alone. Guess who i been thinkin’ about? Casy! He talked a lot. Used ta bother me. But now I been thinkin’ what he said, an’ I can remember - all of it. Says one time he went out in the wilderness to find his own soul, an’ he foun’ he didn’ have no soul that was his’n. Says he foun’ he jus’ got a little piece of a great big soul. Says a wilderness ain’t no good, ‘cause his little piece of a soul wasn’t no good ‘less it was with the rest, an’ was whole. Funny how I remember. Didn’ think I was even listenin’. But i know a fella ain’t no good alone. (570, Steinbeck)”. In this quote, Tom is talking to his mother about how he is going to finish what Casy started. This also proves that Tom’s philosophy has changed. Before he believed that he should put one froot in front of the other, but now he believes that each of our souls is part of a big…

As Tom looks up to Legree and tells him he would give everything in him if it was needed, Stowe illustrates the ability the human spirit has to overcome suffering. With Tom being the example, Stowe uses the Christian faith as fuel to his ability to be Christ-like throughout the novel. As Tom chooses to stay and not flee with Eliza, he feels it was the right thing to do. When he is sold from the Shelby’s to Haley, then to the St. Claires, then finally ending with Legree, Tom consistently obeyed his master despite their good or bad nature. Stowe describes him has “childlike” at times, representing the goodness of God. In this quote, Tom maintains a level of affection that a child would have towards a parent. The child still seeks approval and giving endless love regardless of how their parent treats them.…

After his adventures, which have been told in many different ways, Tom Thumb learned a very valuable lesson. In one telling of the story, after Merlin had granted Tom’s parent’s wish of having a son, even if he was only as tall as a thumb, Tom fell into a river and was eaten by a fish only to be brought to King Arthur’s court and become a jester of sorts. In another writing of the story, his parents’ wish was granted by the fairies and then Tom promised his father he could return if his father was to sell him for some gold. He then was almost killed several times by getting into trouble with thieves, getting eaten by a cow, and then getting eaten by a wolf. The lesson that Tom learned from these incredible adventures…

For example, in The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street, and The Giver, the characters are alike because they show paranoia because they were second guessing their peers, they acting like leaders to their community, and also because they want to protect themselves so that nothing bad happens to them, or their loved ones. Both of these texts proves that just because the plot or structure of the story is completely different, it does not mean that the characters have to be different. In fact, it shows that the books are very alike, and they are also very relatable. The characters truly show that they are dependable, trustworthy, and brave to their…

Lampwick originated from the movie Pinocchio and was a rebellious character that influenced the protagonist. “Look behind you!” (Twain 1). When Tom says this, he points behind Aunt Polly. She turns to look, and he escapes. When Tom does this, he seems like a rebellious character. In Pinocchio, Lampwick says, “‘Hey Woody!”’ This is Lampwick making fun of Pinocchio.
