The Lady Or The Tiger, By Frank Stockton
Warning! Warning! Warning! In Frank Stockton’s short story “The Lady, or the Tiger,” the readers are introduced to the daughter of a semi-barbaric king and her lowly lover, who was sentenced to go into the King’s arena and choose between two doors: behind one door is a beautiful maiden, and behind the other is a savage, relentless tiger. In a surprise ending, Stockton does not specify which door the lover chose. Instead, he poses the question and warns the readers, “Think of it, fair readers, not as if the decision of the question depended upon yourself, but upon that hot-blooded, semi-barbaric princess, her soul at a white heat beneath the combined fires of despair and jealousy.” (p 3) To the vigilant reader, Stockton’s emphasis upon the …show more content…
The princess’s use of her will and power to gain this information shows how desperate she was. After all, the woman behind the door was one of the “fairest and loveliest of the damsels… but she had dared to raise her eyes to the loved one of the princess…she hated the woman behind that silent door.” In reality, if anybody had even lain an eye on her lover, she would have found it a threat to losing her lover’s heart. “Would it not be better for him to die at once and wait for her in…futurity?” In her jealousy, which consumed her entirely…she didn’t care if he were happy, it only mattered that it be over and quickly.
How often had she dreamed of him opening the door of the tiger, “but how much oftener had she seen him” open the other door to his future wife! These dreams were haunting her for days and nights. “How in her grievous reveries had she gnashed her teeth, and torn her hair,” (p 3) when she watched her lover open the maiden’s door. She had imagined herself in horror multiple times watching events unfold if her lover chose the other maiden. All those numerous events would crush any normal lover, let alone one who had inherited a barbaric nature. She chose to go to the arena; she knew she would have

Within this story, the royal family is given distinguishing traits that explain why the princess would choose death upon her lover. Because she is the daughter of a “semi-barbaric king” (Stockton 2), the thought of her companion getting eaten by a tiger might be more accepting than losing him to another woman. The princess’s uncivilized mind would overrule the appropriate decision, and choose the tiger.…

In the excerpt from ‘Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mom” the mother-daughter relationship differs from that of the excerpt from “The Joy Luck Club”. The writers Amy Chua and Amy Tan have different mother-daughter relationships as well as different tones. Chua comes at it from a mother's point of view, where Tan comes at it from the daughter. There is a lot of tension and frustration in Chua's memoir and that translates to the tone. Tans bitterness to her mom impacts their tone. There are differences in tones between the two recollections and the evidence in the memoirs proves it.…

The princess in “The Lady or the Tiger” struggles when determining the youth’s fate either consisting of death or marriage to another beautiful lady as she contemplates “Which [door to open. The answer is] as plain to her as if [the youth] shouted it from where he stood. There was not an instant to be lost. The question [of which door to open] was asked in a flash; it must be answered in another” (Stockton 302). The princess is forced to decide the youth’s fate in a split second. The short amount of time that is taken for her to make her decision suggests that her emotions may have overruled reason and could lead to her regretting her decision later in life. In a single second, lives could be drastically changed. Up until the last moment, the youth, that the princess had loved, believes that she will spare him; he has a blind faith in the princess and trusts in her choices. The king’s daughter’s heart is torn during this point of decision. She must decide whether she would prefer to see the youth dead or with the lady whom she…

The quote “Too much agreements kill the chat” by Eldridge Cleaver clearly explains this story’s main idea which is too much is less than nothing. By locking the door, the princesses kept their secret more quietly which helped to spread more words. Generally speaking, everybody disliked to be watched over by someone. For instance, the slavery in America leads to several rebel groups, because they wanted to have their freedom.…

One of the reasons I think the tiger came out is because the princess is semi-barbaric.(Paragraph 9) . In fact, it seems to me like she wouldn't mind if her loved ones got torn apart by a tiger and eaten. Another reason is the princess was jealous because the lady was kind, thoughtful, full of laughter and fair.(paragraph 14). As we have read, the man had been seen with that lady in the past having a conversation, although the princess didn't know what they were talking about, as a result, jealousy finally took her over.…
