In the short story “The Lady, or the Tiger” written by Frank R. Stockton, the semi-barbaric princess’s lover is put on trial for daring to love her. The king’s way to find out if someone is guilty or not is to make them choose between two doors. One door has a tiger that will immediately kill the person being put on trial. The other door has a beautiful lady behind it, which the man would be instantly married to. This form of judgment was the king’s twisted way of justice and entertainment. When the princess’s lover was put on trial the princess knew which door contained the lady and which door contained the deadly tiger. The semi-barbaric princess directed her lover to choose the right door, which was the door of the tiger.

The answer is] as plain to her as if [the youth] shouted it from where he stood. There was not an instant to be lost. The question [of which door to open] was asked in a flash; it must be answered in another” (Stockton 302). The princess is forced to decide the youth’s fate in a split second. He decide to create a semi-barbaric, yet civilized form of a justice system, where any person accused of a crime will be given the choice of two doors. One has a tiger that will viciously maul and murder the person, “proving” their guilt. One has a maiden behind it, and the accused is immediately married to this lady, no matter the circumstance.
