The Influence Of Being Born In California
There are copious elements that without a doubt have had a profound impact on myself, specifically being born in California. Numerous factors have a paramount influence on who you are, and for myself, the place I was born adequately peaks the list. Indeed, I can claim that being born in California exposes people to a vast number of cultures. Also, there is a certain slower pace of life. Additionally, the scenery, as well as weather, is extremely beautiful. California’s diverse population, laid back lifestyle, scenery and weather have all played a piece in shaping the person I am

Social location, or the status in life that people have because of their place in a society, have a huge impact on everyone. The impact that social location created could be neutral, but most of the time it will have a positive or negative impact on people. For example, an African American could be discriminated because of his ethnicity, or a patient will choose an older doctor when he needs a treatment. Different social location that we have will affect our decisions in everyday life, and most of the time it happened subconsciously, which means we don’t realize that the decisions we make are based on our social location. Like everyone else, I was affected by my own social location, both positively and negatively.…

Is there anything more frustrating than sitting in rush hour traffic, day after day, knowing that it will never get better? How does standing in line at the grocery story, spending a full day at the DMV, or having to squeeze into the packed elevator in a downtown high-rise sound? These are but a few minor, yet inconvenient, effects of the population explosion we Californian’s are facing. Our geographical space is not getting any larger, but our population is. The 2000 census showed California’s population increased by 13.6% over 1990 census figures to 33,871,648 people. California adds over 550,000 people annually, which is roughly equivalent to adding the entire population of the state of Vermont every year. Why is California so over populated and what are the potential long-term effects of this overcrowding?…

Where you live defines who you are. This statement holds more truth than one may realize. Coming from a small, low income town, you see different aspects of life, and face many privations to reach your final destination. Often people who face struggles, tend to work harder to escape those struggles. However, they neglect to return to help others who face the very same struggles.…

I moved to Colorado when I was about 4 or 5 when my Mother married this wonderful man who raised me to be the man I am today. It may sound strange but I loved the idea of growing up in two states because it gave me the wonderful oppurtunity to see the Great Rockies of Colorado and the Great Plaines of Illinois. When I was younger I moved between the states about every 2 or 3 years so half my education is in Illinois while the other half was in Colorado. Growing up in Colorado I had some incredible times like My brothers and I would spend hours in the summer digging in the back yard trying to see if we could actually get to China (never did) , while in the winters we would spend hours in the front yard building Igloos and slides when it snowed about 4ft. In Illinois the summers were equally amazing we would spend the days swimming at the local pool while we would spend the nights outside of U.S. cellular stadium, when the White Sox were good, a couple blocks down watching the fireworks go off either after a home run or at the end of the game. The winters in Illinois were brutally cold but that still didn't stop us from playing some hardcore tackle football at the High School or sledding down some insanely steep hills. These childhood memories will just keep getting fonder and fonder with time.…

California is a Progressive state whose progressive political ideology originates from the American Progressive Era of the 1800s and continues to influence state legislation today. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, the political unrest in response to anti-suffrage for women and monopolies created a climate for reform to take places in California. Progressives shaped California by bringing public attention to a multitude of issues ranging from human rights to food and water supply. Progressive ideology continues to shape legislation in California even today.…

Take for example Thandie Newton, a well known actress, even she had to adapt to her enviroment. Thandie admits that she was "the black aitheist girl in an all white Catholic school." She didn't fit in, and often felt left out because of her differences. She became depressed, stating that "My self was a car crash, and I wound up with Bulimia on a therapist's couch." However, if she was just placed in a different enviroment, with people that are more similar to her, then she wouldn't have felt left out. This proves that the people you are around (your enviroment) can have an effect on your…

The origination of your life from whatever corner of the world you hail is just the start of who you will eventually become. The culmination of that start depends on where you end up, which accounts for the direction my life has taken from its starting point to now. I immigrated to the United States from Vietnam in 2000. Struggling with the language barrier was but one of the unique challenges faced by myself and my family upon moving to the U.S. It made formal education a challenge, but one thing I was able to take from my home country and my culture in general was my ability to persevere through even the most seemingly insurmountable challenges and roadblocks. During school, I managed to hold down a job to help support my family, which is another cornerstone in my culture and in my life in general. I tried college previously, but had to stop a few times to work longer hours to continue to support my family. This is not unique to my situation; there are thousands of students forced to make the same type of hard decision every day.…
