California Progressive History
California is a Progressive state whose progressive political ideology originates from the American Progressive Era of the 1800s and continues to influence state legislation today. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, the political unrest in response to anti-suffrage for women and monopolies created a climate for reform to take places in California. Progressives shaped California by bringing public attention to a multitude of issues ranging from human rights to food and water supply. Progressive ideology continues to shape legislation in California even today.

Same sex marriage was not officially recognized by the United States until 2013, when the Supreme Court ruled that only legally recognizing marriage between a man and a woman was unconstitutional. However, five years earlier, in 2008, California made same-sex marriage legal within its geographic borders (Wikipedia).The California legalization of same-sex marriage today is very similar to its progressive history of adopting controversial legislation before the same legislation is adopted nation-wide.
Without a doubt California is a state shaped by its progressive history. Political unrest towards women’s suffrage as well as dissatisfaction with government interference with monopolies created a society where people were unhappy with the status quo. As a result, Progressivists ideas for reform were easily supported by the population. By voting for a progressive governor, Hiram Johnson, California continued to build its image as progressive state.
