A black person in America during the 1960’s held an even lower status than a thirteen year old girl. In, The Help, by Kathryn Stockett is a story about a white girl, Eugenia Phelan, who literally was raised by her black maid Constantine. Constantine, even with her black status is a very proud woman and that pride affects Eugenia very much.
Constantine is a very proud woman in two different ways. One way she is very proud is that when she was speaking to Eugenia and she says, “Am I gone believe what them fools say about me?”(73). The quote shows that she is very proud because she doesn’t care if she is a black woman and she is proud of being black. She will not let anybody come into her head and affect what she feels about herself. Another way that Constantine is very proud is when she is speaking with Eugenia, asking if she was ugly, she says, “Ugly be a mean hateful, mean person. Is you one of them peoples” (73). That is saying that Constantine as well as being proud helps Eugenia see that she must be proud of herself too.
Another characteristic of Constantine is the way she affects Eugenia. One example of Constantine is when Constantine says “Is you one of them peoples” (73), and Eugenia says, “I don’t think so”(73). That is when Constantine’s power to affect people comes in. She is slowly helping Eugenia realize that he/she shouldn’t care about what anyone says. Another way that Constantine helps Eugenia realize what the world is, when Constantine tells about the ask yourself question, Eugenia thinks, “I nodded that I understood” (73). That is when Constantine fully helps Eugenia realize what she is about because now Eugenia does not have to be miserable about anything that anyone says. That is Constantine’s power to change people.
