The Dawes act was passed in 1871. It caused Indian tribes to work for the federal government. The act allotted that Indians would get 40-160 acres of land. In a 25 year trust period, if the Indians took care of the land, they got to sell it or put it up for lease. However if the didn’t take care of it, they still had to pay taxes.
