1.1 Health and safety at work act in health and social care covers a number of regulations including
Manual Handling Regulations 1992 (amended 2002)
Control of Substances Hazardous to health regulations 2002 (COSHH)
Reporting Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 (RIDDOR and amended 2008)
Health and Safety, First Aid Regulations 1981
Management of Health and safety at work regulations 1999

1.2 The Law places certain responsibilities on both the employer and the employee to make sure the environment in which the carer is working, that it is safe to carry out the activities required, to keep not just the service user safe but also the carer. We take annual training such as Manual Handling, Safe guarding, First aid, Food Hygiene and more to maintain the safety of the service user and ourselves. This is both the employer’s responsibility and the carer to make sure these are up to date under the Health and Safety Work Act 1974. An individual assessment would be done where necessary to carry out any transfers with equipment. On some occasions an occupational therapist maybe present at the first instance to help provide support to the carer and service user as best how to do any transfers. All assessments carried out are required by regulations set out in polices and procedures, which is covered by Health and Safety at work Act.

1.3. After taking my moving and handling training it is my legal responsibility to use the correct techniques I have been trained to do. This is keeping me and any service user safe from any injuries or any accidents while carry out any moving and handling manovers. I should report and record any accident that happens or that I see happen. Under the Health and safety Act It’s my responsibility to maintain and report any issues with any moving and handling, always check equipment before using it. Under the Food safety Act It is my responsibility where necessary to check, store and throw any
