The Great Gatsby Admirable
In the book, “The Great Gatsby” the readers are able to see how F. Scott Fitzgerald uses multiple characters to create his story. These characters were important because they not only entertain the people, but they also contributed to the overall theme. One of the themes Fitzgerald was trying to convey was how the American Dream is not attainable or achievable. Each character’s actions in this book contributed towards the theme whether their part was big or small. The character’s actions and how they evolved throughout the story is what made the audience like or dislike them. The Great Gatsby conveys that Gatsby and Nick are the two top characters that can be both admirable and despicable. Starting off with Gatsby, there were multiple reasons in the book as to why the readers would despise him. The main reason is due to the fact that he is a liar. An example of this would be when he had lied to Nick about his family existence while they was in Gatsby’s yellow car speeding on the way to lunch to hang out. He is basically like a pair of binoculars and the readers can only see what he sees. He is admirable because he was Gatsby’s only real good friend. Throughout the story we see how he helps Gatsby with his favors even though he felt a little reluctant about them. An example of this would be when Jordan Baker asks Nick the favor that Gatsby wanted. The favor was Gatsby wanted Nick to invite Daisy over his house. In chapter 4 Nick thinks to himself “The modesty of the demand shook me. He had waited five years and bought a mansion where he dispensed starlight to casual moths so that he could ‘come over’ some afternoon to a stranger’s garden.”(Fitzgerald Page 85). However, as the story continues he invited Daisy over for Gatsby. Even though Nick may be admired being a true friend, there were things he did that made the readers despise
