The Godfather: A Literary Analysis The Godfather is a movie about the life lived in a world of gangsters. Michael Corleone is the son of Vito Corleone who plays “the godfather”. Michael is a successful and level-headed man who went to college and enlisted in the marines to avoid falling into the entrapments of the family business. However, throughout the film Michael not only gets involved in the mafia but takes the negatives of this world to more extremes than does his father, making himself into a mean and cruel man that Vito Corleone was not. Michael is an honorable man at the beginning of The Godfather until his father is shot but not assassinated. Vito’s security is taken away so that men can try to come and murder him while at the hospital. Michael prevents this, but in doing so he welcomes his downfall into the man he does not want to be. As Michael shoots the crooked cops, we see his other side emerge. Michael leaves for Sicily, falls in love and gets married. This could have saved him from what he has already done and could prevent him from a place of no return in the mafia world. But when Appolonia is blown up in a car that was meant for him, it sets Michael off especially with learning also of his brother Sonny’s murder. Michael is now fully involved in the family business. We see this as he and his father plan to little by little wipe out all the Dons of the other families.

When looking at American history, it becomes clear that immigrants came into America in waves and were discriminated against, due to the immense size of these immigration waves. During the early 1800’s, Italy had the largest influx of immigrants coming into America at the time. Because of this, many were discriminated against in terms of jobs, housing, and medical care. To protect themselves from the outside world and create more jobs for their relatives immigrating to America; the Italians came together to form the mafia. As explained by Karen Jaehne, "Coppola 's Godfather epic may have had a richer mise en scene and grander ambitions—the depiction of the immigrant, tribal Mafia 's evolution into a multinational corporation as a metaphor for the saga of Americanization” (Citron 423). This means that this film was used to show the fact that even though the immigrants were against impossible odds, they used teamwork and loyalty to still strive to the top. This is the “American dream” adopted by many immigrants, but is risky because of the level of illegal activity. The mafia was used for organized crime creating a new market for revenue that did not exist prior because it was illegal activity. In the film, Vito Corleone is the don of the mafia and is portrayed as a man…

It is the larger picture the writer and director want people to see throughout it. The mafia is what ran the streets of New York during this time period. The entire movie was based around the mafia and their activities. The gambling, the bars, the violence. It was all a part of the mafia and its power. The opposing side to the power issue with the mafia is that of what his father tries to teach him in regards to it as well as to the issues of racism and the morals a person should have. The issues his father brings into the film all play into the way the characters interact with each other and the smaller picture that is going on inside the mafia-run streets of New York in the…

I chose the movie Goodfellas to watch for my project. For this movie we had to do the camera work and how it affected the movie. The movie shows in how the soldiers of the mafia or gangs lived. It is centralized around the middle men showing no true boss or Don of the gang. The main character is Henry Hill. It starts out with him as a kid being brought into the “family” and then the rest of the movie is his exploits or his life choices.…

Michael Corleone was the tragic hero because he qualified to Aristotle’s traits. For example, Michael was born in a wealthy family and he could choose his life path. He joined the army and went to Frontline during World War II. Many Americans praised soldiers as a hero because soldiers killed enemies and protected the whole country. For instance, in the movie, one of the police was hesitated after he heard Captain McCluskey ordered him and other policies to grab Michael. However, the police believed that Michael was a good person. Another trait was Michael faced and accepted responsibility for own fate. In this Italian neighborhood, where Calogero grew up, there were many different dynamics. His father was a bus driver for the city, and always looked out for his son not to get into trouble. One of the main deviant influences in the film was an Italian mafia that operated in a bar across the street. Every day as a young boy, Calogero mimicked what the mobsters were doing, especially Sonny. Sonny was the mafia boss in the neighborhood; Calogero saw how everyone respected him. One day Calogero witnessed Sonny kill a guy in front of his house, which seemed to be over a parking space. When the police came upstairs to ask the boy who did it, he did not “rat.” After the questioning, Calogero said to his father “I did a good thing right? I didn’t rat.” His father responded and said “yes you did a good thing for a bad man.” Calogero didn’t understand why his father said that. The next day Sonny took Calogero under his wing, when this happened he noticed that he was treated differently. And Calogero liked how this new found of respect he got from people in the neighborhood. A couple of mafia guys even offered Calogero’s father a job, but he denied their offer. Calogero’s father chose to live a straight life as a conformist he did not want to affiliate himself with the mafia. No matter how much the family was struggling, no matter how much his wife told him that they can use the extra money. He still did not give in to any of these deviant behaviors. During this time, when he was young, Calogero was…

The segment of “The Godfather” shows the irony of the vows made by Michael Corleone and the murders he commits. The symbolism of Catholics and the belief of cleansing and the idea of baptism based on integrity shows irony of mafia and hypocrisy of people who kill go to church. The montage creates an intense situation that emphasises the irony of the mafia’s double life. This shows the audience the sense of belonging the mafia has towards the two different groups. When Michael is seen with the two different groups, it can be seen by the audience that there is tenser in the mafia group. Michael shows a difference in attitude when with family. However in the last scene the family is also portrayed very tense, this is after Michael kills his brother-in-law. The scenes in the church where the baby is being baptised and the murders juxtapose as it contradicts with the innocence of the baby and the mafia’s crimes.…

In the eyes of Suzanne Wong, Vito Corleone is a man who deserves to be admired. He is a man who does well and expects nothing less in return. In Wong’s essay, she constantly brings up the deeds he does for everyone. Her reasons about why Don Vito Corleone is such a great role model were very well explained and detailed. She builds up Vito’s character so others can view him as a god like figure, hence why his nickname is The Godfather. I do agree with her on some topics, but at the same time I disagree. I agree with Wong when she says friendships are important, and Vito really showed how important it was. In addition, I agree with her argument about traditional values. What I don’t necessarily agree with is what she said about success and how the Don achieved it by himself. So therefore I mainly agree with Wong but at the same time I disagree just a little. I agree with Corleone being a good role model because he values friendship and traditional values but I don’t agree that he is because his success all resulted from violence.…
