“The General Manager I admire”

In my work experience I was lucky enough to have an opportunity to work for, and it’s not only my opinion, two Ireland’s best general managers. Not satisfied with having one excellent general manager, Aghadoe Heights Hotel has managed to secure two. Hoteliers Marie and Pat Chawke took over the management of Aghadoe in 2000. This husband and wife team were appointed as joint general managers to reinforce its reputation as one of thefinest five-star hotels in Ireland.
Marie Chawke, who was born in Limerick and studied at Shannon College of Hotel Management, began her career at the Malahide, Co Dublin in 1993. After two years, she moved to the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham as sales and marketing coordinator. She then joined Kay Randles’ team at the Randles Court Hotel in Killarney in 1997. Marie worked there for more than three years in a number of positions, including general manager, before moving to Cork City to manage Hayfield Manor Hotel in 1998. Under Marie’s guidance, the hotel was awarded the RAC Gold Ribbon and also four red diamonds from the AA.
In 1999, she moved to Aghadoe Heights, where she oversaw the refurbishment of the hotel alongside Peter Johnston and Anne O’Reilly. Marie pays great attention to details and takes a keen interest in making sure that guests really enjoy the ‘Aghadoe Experience’. All around the premises you can spot Marie’s personal touch, manifested by stylish elegance and sophistication, the features which can be easily recognized within herself alone. Refined through long practice and naturally classy is her appearance and combine that with mesmerizing smile, there is a recipe for a perfect, professional manager. To reassure the success there is Pat to assist his wife in day-to-day operations.
Pat Chawke was born in Co Wexford, and he started his hotel career in 1990 at the Three Lakes Hotel in Killarney, where he worked for two years. In 1993, he accepted the role of deputy

We do arrive safely at our all-inclusive resort and, after the drive. The cheery, personable valet also bumps fists with me, offers the phrase "Respect Mon, “and hands me a fancy tropical fruit drink.. We sip our drinks, now fully relaxed on a comfy sofa in the breeze-filled Colonial-style parlor. Some more laided back employees then take away our bags and takes to our room. I have to say however that the employees may be laid back but they must be efficient as there was “no problem Mon” and “no worries”, leaving us with no complaints.…

The first thing I noticed about Georgina was that she was a very pleasant and well-presented lady wearing clean and smart attire and had her hair tied up with a comb. On arriving at the café Georgina was introduced to the owner of the café by Sue a lady from ACT. Georgina wasted no time in taking her place behind the counter, introduced herself properly to her new colleagues then promptly went to the sink and washed her hands. Now settled and ready she began to fulfil her task, she set about washing up the dirty dishes rinsing the cups and plates with clean warm water as she went along, clearing down work surfaces using the colour coded cloths provided for each specific tasks and maintaining the strict level of hygiene expected. On being prompted Georgina would serve customers giving them any information that they required for example what was the specials of the day, how much particular items were, taking payment and dispensing change correctly as required. On taking orders Georgina would advise customers how long their food would take to be processed, she would show them to a table of their choice and then she would bring the food out to the customer when the food was ready. Georgina would watch for customers finishing their meals. Once the customers had got up and left Georgina…

Virtually everyone has someone that they admire. Most of my friends Admire movie stars like Edris Elba or superstar athletes like the Miami Heat's Lebron James. Removing the more rigid approach Joyce Lodge had set has damaged the system that had been in place, making the business ‘lose its way’. This allowed the managers to use their own ideas allowing them to do so, has enabled them to move away from the familiar brand model, thus slowly losing the brand image. The managers have had such a free reign over their shops; they have implemented their own ideas, such as low cost food, healthy eating and even changing the décor.…
