How does the community look and sound like? landscape, architecture, traffic and technology
»The Giver« by Lois Lowry is a novel taking place in the future. Jonas, the main character, lives in a community with other people. This community is very special and maybe it’ll be reality in a few years.
The community is like an independent city or village. You can compare it with a tribe. There are dwellings where family units live in (p.9). A family unit is like a family but a man is divided to a woman and they can apply for children. A boy and a girl belong to each family unit. Those dwellings are terraced houses (Reihenhäuser) (p.42) which are all in one area (p.29). They aren’t special buildings and there isn’t special furniture. One piece of furniture has one function (p.62).
Apart from these ordinary dwellings there are other, special buildings in the community. The citizens have everything they need. For children there is a school (p.19) which is left by the children with the Ceremony of Twelve. They spend their after-school hours in the Childcare Center (p.9) where they do their homework they play games in the play area (p.12) which is around the Childcare Center (p.29). The Recreation Area is the same like the play area (p.25).
Those children, who go to the Childcare Center, were born in the Birthing Center (p.24) and after the birth they came to the Nurturing Center for one year (p.16). As »newchildren« they don’t have usual mothers. They were born by Birthmothers by artificial insemination (cp. p.24).
When the citizens are ill or injured they go to the Rehabilitation Center which is nothing else than a hospital (p.28). A meaningful building is the Department of Justice (p.14). If any citizen doesn’t obey the rules of the community he or she is punished by the judges. But the punishments are not like them we know. If a person breaks the rules for three times he or she will be released. A release takes place in the Releasing
