Amber Ordoway's The Giver
Amber Ordoway had known for quite a while that she wasn't attracted to guys, but she hadn't told anyone. It wasn't out of fear of being ridiculed or seen as some sort of show, it was simply because it was no one's god damn business. But finally, at the first party of junior year she came out of the closet, metaphorically of course. It had all happened because of one Matthew Jonas, a sleazy senior guy who probably should've known better than to hit on her.

She was simply standing around, a red solo cup filled with some sort of alcohol in her hand, talking to one of her friends. It just so happened that this friend was Isaac Lahey, or in her terms, baby beta. Isaac and really the rest of the pack had their suspicions about Amber's sexuality, but they never bothered asking because it simply didn't matter to them what gender she preferred. Matthew Jonas, whom both of the juniors already disliked came swaggering over—yes, swaggering—completely drunk off his ass.

"Hello,"

Like I said before, I'm not interested."

Seeming to give up, and slightly frightened by the fact that Isaac looked about ready to snap his neck, Matthew scoffed and said loudly, "Whatever, you're painfully homosexual anyway. I suppose you're going to go fuck your girlfriend or something."

This drew attention of people who were nearby, at first many of them had assumed he had been talking to Isaac, who looked ready to kill now more than ever. But they soon realised it was in fact little miss Amber Ordoway, who despite the sudden insult remained level headed.

"Yup," she said, taking a sip from her cup, "you're right. The only straight I am is straight up bitch."

With that, Amber Ordoway pushed Matthew into the pool beside them and made her grand exit, quickly followed by a now slightly amused Isaac

Jealousy is the key factor that pushes us to do better or it can overpower our thinking abilities because we want to be the best, so we don’t think about how it can affect the people around us. This is exactly what happens in the story, “MVP,” by Clare Mishica. Derek wants to be the most valuable player on his basketball team instead of Cole so much that he forgets to be a team player. When Cole gets hurt, Derek realizes how much more important the trophy and being a part of the team is than getting MVP. Teamwork is always more efficient than trying to achieve something individually because a person can do very little alone, but together we can accomplish a lot. The saying, “Two heads are better than one,” goes along with this perfectly.…

He participates on the tennis team and everyday he showers with the other boys. This is the most critical stage in which the protagonist realizes his sexuality. In this environment, he finds similarities between Rays and the locker room. They both have “quick insults and sarcasm” and “ each comment an attempt to top the one before” (316). The protagonist doesn’t feel comfortable with these conversations, and attempts to be a part of them by “snort[ing] at appropriate moments” (316). The protagonist feels out of place in this setting, he doesn’t feel as if he fits in with the other boys and their masculine traits such as their sarcasm and attempts to top each others’ comments. This is evident as he begins to come out to himself as a homosexual. Another reason he doesn’t feel comfortable in the Locker Room is because as he is in the locker room he stares at “what interested and confused me most: the other boys’ bodies” (316). During this point in his life, the protagonist is in high school, and these times are a critical point for him discovering his sexual preference. The main character realizes he’s attracted to men and in his head, he feels as if he is an…

The Girl with all the Gifts has multiple setting, the novel first took place in Hotel Echo in a base in London in the future. In the past London experienced a breakdown 20 years ago where a disease named Ophiocordyceps infected almost the whole civilization. Once the breakdown occurred everything became a dystopia. The world full life with video games, money etc, turned into broken society with flesh eating creatures. M.R. Carey began the novel with Melanie and her fellow students strapped in wheelchairs having classes daily then going back into their cells. The children are numbered and classified as test subjects, and were taught about the past world. They were brought to the base as little children by sargent parks and other military men to be tested why they were able to halt the disease ophiocordyceps from taking total control over their minds. The scientists dissected a couple test subjects and brought Melane the most intelligent subject at the base to the lab. Miss Justineau began to care and love Melanie during classes and went to save her. An explosion stopped everything, then windows shattered and hungries and junkers bursted in. Miss Justineau along with Dr. Caldwell escaped to the outdoors and noticed Melanie…

I find this short story to be somewhat deceiving at first because it feels as though the story is about the generous nature of Agnes Milton. The first several pages the narrator speaks about her hardships in life and the generosity of Agnes; however, the ending is quite unexpected. The narrator was passed from relative to relative after her father's death (apparently due to alcohol poisoning), but Agnes was the only one kind enough to take her in and treat her like a daughter.…

Many of the modern television shows and movies use similar themes and subject matter as “A&P.” Things like young girls trying to appear older than they are, an awkward young man coming to terms with his sexuality, and the idea of conventional masculinity are all commonly found in the media. The question of how an adolescent girl’s mind works is that one that cannot be easily answered, but attempts are often made. The character of Sammy is virtually clueless about females, and Updike makes this obvious, “You never know for sure how girl’ minds work (do you really think it’s a mind in there or just a little buzz like a bee in a glass jar?).” When this story was written the dynamic between young men and women was not as readily explored, but today it is a source of entertainment. High school dramas have taken over prime time television. However, this story is not one of drama, but rather ironic humor. The reader anticipates Sammy to act like a typical teenage boy, and mirror the actions of his coworker. Instead, he connects to them on a more emotional level, which leads him to act irrationally. Updike turns what could have been another typical teenage story into a satire of society’s expectations on sexuality and gender.…

That statement seem to shock Amanda Gronich, she had no words apparently or she was angry that someone could of said something so ignorant. It’s understandable that it says in the bible it is wrong to be gay, and people have their own beliefs on that subject, but that does not mean they should be brutally beaten for their lifestyle. It seemed that he showed no remorse at all to the death of Matthew, of course because…

As a young boy, I had always possessed an intrinsic idea of being different from other people, especially boys. I had a rather flamboyant and bold personality that caused the other boys to persecute me daily. As a result, I tried my hardest to conceal these qualities as a way to prevent being ostracized, however this was to no prevail. I was forced to transfer to multiple schools in order to elude from the closed minded students who taunted me. During the summer of eighth grade, I began to question myself of my sexuality. People had always interrogated me about my gender preference, but I was never aware of my answer. I had always been dubious towards the topic; I was never willing to entertain it. Indeed, the very thought of the dreaded topic caused my stomach to churn. However, I knew I would not allow a repetition of middle school to occur in high school. I initiated a process of self-discovery and began to reveal the person I was under the concealment. I dismantled my walls and slowly uncovered my true identity. I had reached a mental breakthrough. I am gay.…

    LGBT Community in Society

    • 965 Words
    • 3 Pages

In this generation people should be more accepting, understanding and more supporting of the LGBT community, we’re not aliens and we’re not completely different. We are who we are and we’re going to be in this world as long as anyone else is. Time passes, development begins; “sugar, spice and everything nice” is all I hear. “No, wait”, I say to the ultrasound tech. “You’re wrong! It's snips, snails and puppy dog tails.” Mom’s water breaks, and here I come ready to experience this thing called a marvelous life. Rosy cheeks, a silent cry, then the announcement, "It's a girl", emerges out of the nurse’s mouth. “You're wrong,” I scream. “I'm a boy.” As time passes all I hear is, stop acting like, stop dressing like, and play with those dolls. When in reality I'm not acting like or dressing like, I'm just being me. Growing up for me was a bit tough, at first I had an ongoing war with myself because I was so confused; “Is this right? Am I going to hell for this?” I always questioned myself. When I finally made it to high school unlike other teens it was pretty easy for me to come out in school, but at home it was more complex. My mom was hurt and she kind of pushed me away, but I didn’t want to be like those other teens who have horrible relationships with their parents because of their preference in sex. I stood up for myself and I told her that I didn’t ask to be this way, this is just who I am. It's not the latest trend, it started at birth but the choice wasn't mine, my outer image was designed for me but my inner spirit no one can see. Life is a choice and I choose to live and be me. Even despite what society says, thinks and naturally sees. This is more for the transgender community but we surely don’t differ from each other.…
