Argyles theory contains six stages that brake down the way people communicate. This makes it easier for people to understand who they are communicating with, as one of the stages allows you to think before you speak. So you can communicate in the appropriate manner to suit an individual’s needs. (Moonie, N, 2010).
Argyle had 2 key aims that he felt were very important:
1. Communication was a skill that could be learned and developed.
2. Communication is a cycle process that goes round and is repeated.
(Moonie, N, 2010).
Argyle cycle consist of six stages:
1. The first is where an idea occurs when we think about what to say to someone and who we say it too.
2. Message code and when we plan to say it.
3. The third stage is all about when we transmit and deliver the message.
4. This stage is when the message is received and when the other person hears what you say.
5. This stage is when the message is decoded this when the person you are talking too translates what you have said in a different language to meet the needs of the person.
6. The final stage is when the message has being understood and the other person can understand the meaning of the message (Moonie, N, 2010)

The Theory also allows you to think before you speak as you have to speak in appropriate manner to match their needs and age. The disadvantages of Argyles theory are people may not decode the message properly so they might not understand. The person they are trying may not reply so it may cause confusion and if they don’t reply because they are confused the cycle won’t be able to ongoing as it has to be a two way process.
