The Five Stages Of Theories Of Development
Any childâ€TMs development can be measured in various ways and is always a continuous process. Each child is an individual and will develop at different ways both physically and mentally. The common denominator amongst theories of development is the way in which a child develops can be roughly the same, and are driven by the biological and physical development of the chid.
I have described the areas of development in a five stage process:-
Stage One – 0-1 Years – this is a key 12 months where a child builds trust with the people who respond to their needs. Emotional warmth is key to building up this sense of trust. If this trust is not built up then a child can be fearful of adults and others and this rejection is already starting to become established.

Childre will now ask why, and query actions and decisions. Children will want to be more industrious and enjoy things such as baking and sewing. A childâ€TMs sense of interest will also allow them to compare themselves to their peers.
Physically, fundamental movements are still paramount as a child is going through change and physically developing.
Stage Five – 12-19 Years – A child is now developing to an adolescent. Social acceptance is now seen as important at this stage of development. A child is very aware of the importance of what others think of them. Biological changes are also occurring which results in new feelings and sensations for the child to deal with.
Physical development for children during this stage is individual for each child. During this stage some children will reach their full physical maturity whilst others will only be starting their journey.

    When growing up there are 4 areas that can be looked at to see how a person’s development is progressing, these are, emotional and social, language and physical and intellectual.     Sensorimotor and pre operational are the first two stages. Sensorimotor stage begins at birth and ends through age 2. During this stage, children learn object permanence which means children are able to understand that an object is still there even though they cannot see it anymore. Preoperational stage begins from age 2 and ends around age 7. During this stage, they experience egocentrism which means they have an inability to understand others viewpoint from theirs. There are four stages of language development, babbling which begins around 0-4 months, one word which begins around 1 year, two words which begin around 18 months, and multiple word sentences and this starts around 2 years of age. The next two stages are concrete operational and formal operational. Concrete operational occurs at ages 7-11 and is when they can think logically about objects and events and they can achieve conservation of numbers. Formal operational occurs around ages 11 years and older and they think logically about proportions and test hypothesis while becoming hypothetical and ideological about problems. Another psychologist, Erik Erikson, was best known for the psychosocial stages of development which outlines the personality development from birth to old age. There are eight psychosocial stages; the first is trust vs. mistrust and develops from birth to age one and is the most fundamental stage in one's life. An infant is entirely dependent on the caregiver's quality of care. The next stage is autonomy vs. shame/doubt and this is where children ages 18 months to 2 start to feel greater self-control and start potty training, toy preferences, clothing selection, and food choices all allow them to feel greater personal sense of acknowledge.     The term “Sequence” of child development refers to the how we expect a child to develop from the day it was born to the age of 19. Child Development is the biological, physiological and all the emotional changes that happen during these formative years as the child goes from dependency to autonomy. These changes could be hugely influenced by genetics, events that occur whilst in the womb and during prenatal development and are usually included in most studies of child development. Developmental changes are different. They occur as a result of a genetically controlled process called maturation or as a result of environmental factors and learning (home life and school for example) but these changes most commonly happen as a result of a combination of them both. It can also be a result of “human nature” which is the ability of the growing child to in fact learn from their environment. Human beings and especially children have a keen sense to adapt to their surroundings and this is what child development covers and includes. A child’s development is continually happening and can be measured in many different ways and although the child will develop at different rates and in different ways, the sequence in which this happens will follow the same sort of pattern .This is because in most examples they need to learn one skill before they can move onto the next. An example is walking. The child will need to learn to walk before they can run or jump etc. Development in children is more rapid in the early stages with many milestones happening in quick succession.
