The Effect of Water Temperature on the time taken to dissolve Salt

Aim: To see the effect of water temperature on salt.

Hypothesis: If the temperature of the water is increased the time taken for the salt to dissolve completely will be shorter.

Equipment
Heat proof mat
Tripod
Bunsen burner
Gauze mat
Electronic Balance
2 beakers
Measuring cylinder
Salt
Water
Stirring rod
Thermometer
Safety glasses
Stopwatch
Plastic spoon

Method:
Take beaker and fill with 100ml of water
Measure 5 grams of salt, put aside
Place beaker over Bunsen burner
Hold thermometer just above base of beaker
Heat to desired temperature
Remove from Bunsen burner and place on heat proof mat
Add prepared salt and start timer
Use stirring rod to stir until salt is dissolved
Stop timer and record time
Repeat process three times over to ensure it is a fair test
Repeat entire method for each temperature

Discussion:

Results: The results of this experiment show that salt dissolves quicker in water with a higher temperature. In the 15 tests that were completed, only two were unreliable proving the theory that was given in the hypothesis and completing the aim of the experiment.
Errors:
Errors that occurred within the experiment were such as overheating the water, and having to begin again, adding to much salt to the heated water and forgetting to start the timer after having put salt in the heated water.

Improvement that could have been made are

As proved in the experiment the time taken for salt to dissolve is shorter the higher the water temperature is. The

    What is the effect of salt on the boiling temperature of water? Many people know the boiling temperature of water is 100 degrees. What if the boiling temperature can be increased by adding salt well it can. This experiment was a success. My hypothesis tested true my hypothesis states that the salt will increase the boiling temperature of water because different elements have different effects on each other. So I think the salt will increase the boiling temperature of water. The temperature of boiling water is 212.9 Fahrenheit. When 1 tablespoon of salt was added the temperature bubbled, showing instant reaction to the salt and the temperature rose to 215.6 but the bubbling water stopped bubbling and in exactly 7 seconds began to re -bubble again. I added another tablespoon of salt the boiling distilled water bubbled up again the same as the first test the only difference is the temperature of the boiling temperature of water was 218.3. The interesting result is the heat from the stove results in the temperature shown on the thermometer because the heat caused from the stove is vigorously high in temperature. What I really did is step 1 heat a stove with a 2 quart cooking pot with distilled water step 2 wait for the water to start boiling step 3 place 1 tablespoon of salt in the water and place the thermometer in the water and record any data step 4 repeat step 3 after adding another tablespoon of salt compare your two observations and temperatures. This experiment can be used in real world situation with cooking because something requiring water being boiled to cook it can be cooked two times faster because of the salt increasing the boiling temperature.
