Ionic and Covalent Bonds Lab
How do ionic bonds form?
Transferring the electron forms an ionic bond. After transferring the electron, the two atoms become ion n will attract together because they have the opposite charges. Then an ionic bond is formed.

How do covalent bonds form?
A covalent bond is for sharing of electrons. I remember it like co-existing electrons to share (Eg H20). It is usually between two non-metals.

Which compound, sugar or salt, is a better conductor of electricity? Explain your answer.
Salt, because it's an ionic compound (there isn't a real bond, but a charge separation e.g. NaCl in reality is Na+ Cl-)

Part One:

Substance: Observations:

NaCl
Sodium Chloride
The substance did not do anything. It was unaffected by the heat.

C12H22O11
Sucrose
The substance melted in the pan.

Part Two:

Substance: Observations:

Sugar Solution
The sugar solution heated up with the electricity.

Salt Solution
The salt solution did nothing.

In Part 1 of the experiment, which material had the lower melting point?
The sugar had a lower melting point than the salt.
In Part 2 of the experiment, could you use tap water or mineral water to conduct this experiment? Explain your answer.
You could use tap water or mineral water. Both work because both can support the flow of electricity and heat from the battery.
In Part 2 of the experiment, why did a stream of bubbles move away from the stainless steel screw in the salt solution but not in the sugar solution?
The salt solution was hotter than the sugar solution, causing it to bubble whereas the sugar solution did not.
In Part 2 of the experiment, what could account for any bubbles that appeared in the sugar solution?
Remaining particles that are still hot could cause bubbles.
Would either solution light as mall light bulb in place of the battery? What if the light bulb were connected between the iron nail and the battery? Explain.
The light bulb would light up in this situation because the electricity from the battery would be able to travel through the wires and to the bulb.
